One of the most common questions about the early chapters of Genesis is: “Where did Cain get his wife if Adam and Eve were the only people on earth?” The Bible itself gives us a clear and straightforward answer.

First, Genesis 3:20 tells us that “Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she had to become the mother of everyone living.” This shows that all humans were to descend from Adam and Eve. Then Genesis 5:3-4 fills in an important detail that many overlook: “Adam lived on for a hundred and thirty years. Then he became father to a son in his likeness, in his image, and called his name Seth. And the days of Adam after his fathering Seth came to be eight hundred years. Meanwhile he became father to sons and daughters.”

This means Adam and Eve had many other children besides Cain, Abel, and Seth — including daughters. Cain’s wife was one of his sisters. At that early stage in human history, with outstanding physical health and vitality, the danger of genetic defects from marrying a close relative was not yet a serious issue. It was only about 2,500 years later, after mankind’s physical condition had greatly deteriorated, that God gave Israel laws forbidding incest.

Genesis 4:16-17 also confirms this understanding: “Cain went away from the face of Jehovah and took up residence in the land of Fugitiveness to the east of Eden. Afterward Cain had intercourse with his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.” Notice that the text does not say Cain found his wife in the land of Nod. It simply says that after he moved there, he had relations with his wife and she conceived. She was already his wife before he left.

The Bible’s explanation is simple, consistent, and requires no speculation about other human races or creations. All humans truly came from one family — Adam and Eve.

Why Did God Later Forbid Marriage Between Close Relatives?

The Bible record does indicate that Cain married one of his sisters and that Abraham married his half-sister. But later, in the Law given through Moses, such marriage unions were specifically forbidden. They are not permitted among Christians today. Marriage to a close relative results in a more-than-average probability that damaging hereditary factors will be passed on to their offspring.

Why was brother-and-sister marriage not inappropriate at the beginning of mankind’s history? God created Adam and Eve perfect and purposed that all humankind descend from them. Obviously, some marrying of close relatives, especially within the first few generations, would occur. Even after sin made its appearance, there was relatively little danger of marked deformities in the children during early generations, because the human race was much closer to the perfection that had been enjoyed by Adam and Eve. This is attested to by the longevity of people then. But about 2,500 years after Adam became a sinner, God prohibited incestuous marriage. This served to safeguard the offspring and it elevated the sexual morality of Jehovah’s servants above that of people around them who were then engaging in all manner of depraved practices.

Why Was Cain Afraid of Being Killed, and Who Were the People in the Land of Nod?

Cain was afraid because by the time he killed Abel, Adam and Eve had many other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4). These siblings, along with their growing families, would have been numerous enough to pose a real threat to Cain. His fear was not imaginary — there were already many people on the earth from the same original family.

As for the land of Nod, the Bible does not say Cain found his wife there or that he discovered other unrelated people living there. Genesis 4:16-17 simply says Cain left God’s presence, settled in the land of Nod, and afterward had relations with his wife. His wife was already with him when he arrived. The people in that area were also descendants of Adam and Eve.

This explanation stays fully within the biblical text without needing to invent other human creations.
