What Does It Mean to Fully Commit to God?
True commitment to Jehovah is not a fleeting decision or a conditional allegiance based on circumstances. It is a lifelong dedication to follow Him, no matter the cost. One of the most beautiful expressions of unwavering devotion in Scripture is found in Ruth 1:16, where Ruth, a Moabite woman, speaks to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi, saying: “Do not urge me to abandon you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.” These words capture the essence of total commitment, showing Ruth’s determination to leave behind her old life, embrace a new identity, and fully trust in Jehovah.
Ruth’s statement is particularly powerful because she was not an Israelite by birth. The Moabites were historically separated from Israel, often in conflict with God’s people. Despite this, Ruth chose to forsake the gods of her homeland and embrace the true and living God. This decision was not made for convenience, nor was it based on external benefits. Rather, it was a sincere declaration of faith that was demonstrated through action. Ruth did not merely acknowledge Jehovah’s existence—she fully committed her life to serving Him. Many today struggle with the idea of complete dedication to God, often reserving parts of their life for their own desires while giving only partial obedience. However, Ruth’s example reminds us that serving Jehovah requires wholehearted devotion.
Her faith was not just verbal but active. She followed Naomi to Bethlehem, worked tirelessly in the fields to provide for them, and ultimately became part of God’s redemptive plan. She was blessed to be an ancestor of King David and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ. This was no coincidence—Jehovah rewards those who seek Him with sincerity and perseverance. Hebrews 11:6 affirms this truth: “Moreover, without faith it is impossible to please God well, for whoever approaches God must believe that he is and that he becomes the rewarder of those earnestly seeking him.” Ruth’s faith was more than belief—it was demonstrated through her actions.
True commitment to Jehovah also means embracing His people. Ruth declared, “Your people will be my people.” This was not a small decision. By choosing to go with Naomi, Ruth accepted all the responsibilities and expectations that came with joining the nation of Israel. She was willing to leave behind her former identity and integrate into a new community that worshiped Jehovah. This illustrates the importance of Christian fellowship today. We are not meant to walk alone in our faith but to be joined with fellow believers, sharing in the blessings and responsibilities of God’s people. Hebrews 10:24-25 emphasizes this: “And let us consider one another so as to incite to love and fine works, not forsaking our meeting together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
Ruth’s journey also teaches that true commitment to Jehovah involves perseverance through hardship. She did not know what lay ahead in Bethlehem. She was a widow, had no immediate prospects, and faced the uncertainty of life in a foreign land. Yet, she moved forward in faith, trusting that Jehovah would provide. Many people today face difficulties that test their commitment to God—financial struggles, loss, opposition from unbelievers—but Ruth’s example reminds us that faithfulness brings blessings, even when the path is unclear. Psalm 37:5 reassures us: “Commit your way to Jehovah; rely on him, and he will act in your behalf.”
Ultimately, Ruth’s unwavering commitment was not unnoticed by Jehovah. He orchestrated events that led her to Boaz, a man of integrity who redeemed her, ensuring her place in Israel’s history. Her faithfulness was not just about earthly provision but about being part of God’s greater plan. When we commit ourselves to Jehovah fully, He works in ways we may not immediately see, but His purposes are always for our good and His glory. Romans 8:28 confirms this: “We know that God makes all his works cooperate together for the good of those who love God, those who are called according to his purpose.”
Ruth’s declaration in Ruth 1:16 is not just a historical statement but a timeless lesson in faithfulness. It challenges us to examine our own level of commitment to Jehovah. Are we following Him with our whole heart, or are we holding back? Are we embracing His people, persevering through difficulties, and trusting in His plan? True commitment to Jehovah is not about mere words but about a life lived in faithful obedience.
