1 ἸάκωβοςJames θεοῦof God καὶand κυρίουof Lord ἸησοῦJesus ΧριστοῦChrist δοῦλοςslave ταῖςto the δώδεκαtwelve φυλαῖςtribes ταῖςthe (ones) ἐνin τῇthe διασπορᾷdispersion

χαίρειν.To be rejoicing.

2 ΠᾶσανAll χαρὰνjoy ἡγήσασθε,consider you, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, ὅτανwhenever πειρασμοῖςto trials περιπέσητεyou might fall around ποικίλοις,various, 3 γινώσκοντεςknowing ὅτιthat τὸthe δοκίμιονproof ὑμῶνof you τῆςof the πίστεωςfaith κατεργάζεταιis working thoroughly ὑπομονήν·endurance; 4 ἡthe δὲbut ὑπομονὴendurance ἔργονwork τέλειονperfect ἐχέτω,let it be having, ἵναi   in order that   ἦτε  you may be τέλειοιperfect καὶand ὁλόκληροι,whole in (every) part, ἐνin μηδενὶnothing λειπόμενοι.lacking.

5 ΕἰIf δέbut τιςanyone ὑμῶνof you λείπεταιis lacking σοφίας,of wisdom, αἰτείτωlet him be asking παρὰfrom τοῦof the (one) διδόντοςgiving θεοῦof God πᾶσινto all ἁπλῶςsimply καὶand μὴnot ὀνειδίζοντος,reproaching, καὶand δοθήσεταιit will be given αὐτῷ·to him; 6 αἰτείτωlet him be asking δὲbut ἐνin πίστει,faith, μηδὲνnothing διακρινόμενος,doubting, wavering, ὁthe (one) γὰρfor διακρινόμενοςdoubting, wavering ἔοικενhas been like κλύδωνιwave θαλάσσηςof sea ἀνεμιζομένῳto (one) being driven by wind καὶand ῥιπιζομένῳ·being blown about; 7 μὴnot γὰρfor οἰέσθωlet him be supposing   ὁthe ἄνθρωποςman ἐκεῖνοςthat (one) ὅτιthat λήμψεταίhe will receive τιanything παρὰfrom τοῦof the κυρίουLord 8 ἀνὴρmale person δίψυχος,two-souled, ἀκατάστατοςunstable ἐνin πάσαιςall ταῖςthe ὁδοῖςways αὐτοῦ.of him.

9 ΚαυχάσθωLet him be boasting δὲbut ὁthe ἀδελφὸςbrother ὁthe ταπεινὸςlowly (one) ἐνin τῷthe ὕψειheight αὐτοῦ,of him, 10 ὁthe δὲbut πλούσιοςrich ἐνin τῇthe ταπεινώσειlowliness αὐτοῦ,of him, ὅτιbecause ὡςas ἄνθοςflower χόρτουof grass παρελεύσεται.he will go along. 11 ἀνέτειλενRose up γὰρfor ὁthe ἥλιοςsun σὺνtogether with τῷthe καύσωνιburning heat καὶand ἐξήρανενit dried up τὸνthe χόρτον,vegetation, καὶand τὸthe ἄνθοςflower αὐτοῦof it ἐξέπεσενfell out καὶand ἡthe εὐπρέπειαwell-fittingness τοῦof the προσώπουface αὐτοῦof it ἀπώλετο·destroyed itself; οὕτωςthus καὶalso ὁthe πλούσιοςrich (one) ἐνin ταῖςthe πορείαιςjourneys αὐτοῦof him μαρανθήσεται.will fade away.

12 ΜακάριοςHappy ἀνὴρmale person ὃςwho ὑπομένειendures πειρασμόν,trial, ὅτιbecause δόκιμοςapproved γενόμενοςhaving become λήμψεταιhe will receive τὸνthe στέφανονcrown τῆςof the ζωῆς,life, ὃνwhich ἐπηγγείλατοhe promised τοῖςto the (ones) ἀγαπῶσινloving αὐτόν.him. 13 μηδεὶςNo one πειραζόμενοςbeing tried λεγέτωlet him be saying ὅτιthat ᾿ΑπὸFrom θεοῦGod πειράζομαι·♥I am being tried; ὁthe γὰρfor θεὸςGod ἀπείραστόςnot to be tried ἐστινis κακῶν,of bad (things), πειράζειhe is trying δὲbut αὐτὸςhe οὐδένα.no one.♥ 14 ἕκαστοςEach (one) δὲbut πειράζεταιis being tried ὑπὸby τῆςthe ἰδίαςown ἐπιθυμίαςdesire ἐξελκόμενοςbeing drawn out καὶand δελεαζόμενος·being baited on; 15 εἶταnext ἡthe ἐπιθυμίαdesire συλλαβοῦσαhaving received together τίκτειis giving birth to ἁμαρτίαν,sin, ἡthe δὲbut ἁμαρτίαsin ἀποτελεσθεῖσαhaving been finished off ἀποκυεῖis being pregnant off to θάνατον.death.

16 ΜὴNot πλανᾶσθε,be you made to err, ἀδελφοίbrothers μουof me ἀγαπητοί.loved. 17 πᾶσαEvery δόσιςgiving ἀγαθὴgood καὶand πᾶνevery δώρημαthing given τέλειονperfect ἄνωθένfrom upward ἐστιν,it is, καταβαῖνονstepping down ἀπὸfrom τοῦthe πατρὸςFather τῶνof the φώτων,lights, παρ’beside ᾧwhom οὐκnot ἔνιthere is παραλλαγὴalternating beside ἢor τροπῆςof turning ἀποσκίασμα.off-shadow. 18 βουληθεὶςHaving wished ἀπεκύησενhe was pregnant off to ἡμᾶςus λόγῳto word ἀληθείας,of truth, εἰςinto τὸthe εἶναιto be ἡμᾶςus ἀπαρχήνfirstfruits τιναsome τῶνof the αὐτοῦof his κτισμάτων.creatures.

19 Ἴστε,Be you knowing, ἀδελφοίbrothers μουof me ἀγαπητοί.loved. ἔστωLet him be δὲbut πᾶςevery ἄνθρωποςman ταχὺςquick εἰςinto τὸthe ἀκοῦσαι,to hear, βραδὺςslow εἰςinto τὸthe λαλῆσαι,to speak, βραδὺςslow εἰςinto ὀργήν,wrath, 20 ὀργὴwrath γὰρfor ἀνδρὸςof male person δικαιοσύνηνrighteousness θεοῦof God οὐκnot ἐργάζεται.is working. 21 διὸThrough which ἀποθέμενοιhaving put away from selves πᾶσανevery ῥυπαρίανfilthiness καὶand περισσείανabundance κακίαςof badness ἐνin πραΰτητιmildness δέξασθεreceive you τὸνthe ἔμφυτονimplanted λόγονword τὸνthe (one) δυνάμενονbeing able σῶσαιto save τὰςthe ψυχὰςsouls ὑμῶν.of you.

22 ΓίνεσθεBe you becoming δὲbut ποιηταὶdoers λόγουof word καὶand μὴnot ἀκροαταὶhearers μόνονonly παραλογιζόμενοιreckoning beside ἑαυτούς.selves. 23 ὅτιBecause εἴif τιςanyone ἀκροατὴςhearer λόγουof word ἐστὶνis καὶand οὐnot ποιητής,doer, οὗτοςthis (one) ἔοικενhas been like ἀνδρὶto male person κατανοοῦντιminding down τὸthe πρόσωπονface τῆςof the γενέσεωςbirth αὐτοῦof him ἐνin ἐσόπτρῳ,mirror, 24 κατενόησενhe minded down γὰρfor ἑαυτὸνhimself καὶand ἀπελήλυθενhe has gone off καὶand εὐθέωςimmediately ἐπελάθετοhe forgot ὁποῖοςof what sort ἦν.he was. 25 ὁThe (one) δὲbut παρακύψαςhaving stooped beside εἰςinto νόμονlaw τέλειονperfect τὸνthe τῆςof the ἐλευθερίαςfreedom καὶand παραμείνας,having remained beside, οὐκnot ἀκροατὴςhearer ἐπιλησμονῆςof forgetfulness γενόμενοςhaving become ἀλλὰbut ποιητὴςdoer ἔργου,of work, οὗτοςthis (one) μακάριοςhappy ἐνin τῇthe ποιήσειdoing αὐτοῦof him ἔσται.he will be.

26 ΕἴIf τιςanyone δοκεῖis thinking θρῆσκοςformal worshiper εἶναιto be μὴnot χαλιναγωγῶνleading by bridle γλῶσσανtongue ἑαυτοῦof himself ἀλλὰbut ἀπατῶνmisleading καρδίανheart ἑαυτοῦ,of himself, τούτουof this (one) μάταιοςvain ἡthe θρησκεία.form of worship. 27 θρησκείαForm of worship καθαρὰclean καὶand ἀμίαντοςundefiled παρὰbeside τῷthe θεῷGod καὶand πατρὶFather αὕτηthis ἐστίν,is, ἐπισκέπτεσθαιto be looking upon ὀρφανοὺςorphans καὶand χήραςwidows ἐνin τῇthe θλίψειtribulation αὐτῶν,of them, ἄσπιλονunspotted ἑαυτὸνhimself τηρεῖνto be keeping ἀπὸfrom τοῦthe κόσμου.world.

2 ᾿ΑδελφοίBrothers μου,of me, μὴnot ἐνin προσωπολημψίαιςreceptions of faces ἔχετεbe you having τὴνthe πίστινfaith τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us Ἰησοῦof Jesus ΧριστοῦChrist τῆςof the δόξης;glory? 2 ἐὰνIf ever γὰρfor εἰσέλθῃhe might enter εἰςinto συναγωγὴνsynagogue ὑμῶνof you ἀνὴρmale person χρυσοδακτύλιοςgolden-ringed ἐνin ἐσθῆτιclothing λαμπρᾷ,bright, εἰσέλθῃhe should enter δὲbut καὶalso πτωχὸςpoor ἐνin ῥυπαρᾷfilthy ἐσθῆτι,clothing, 3 ἐπιβλέψητεyou might look upon δὲbut ἐπὶupon τὸνthe (one) φοροῦνταwearing τὴνthe ἐσθῆταclothing τὴνthe λαμπρὰνbright καὶand εἴπητεyou might say ΣὺYou κάθουbe you sitting ὧδεhere καλῶς,finely, καὶand τῷto the πτωχῷpoor (one) εἴπητεyou might say ΣὺYou στῆθιstand you ἢor κάθουbe you sitting ἐκεῖthere ὑπὸunder τὸthe ὑποπόδιόνfootstool μου,of me, 4 οὐnot διεκρίθητεwere you judged through ἐνin ἑαυτοῖςselves καὶand ἐγένεσθεbecame you κριταὶjudges διαλογισμῶνof divided reckonings πονηρῶν;wicked?

5 ᾿Ακούσατε,Hear you, ἀδελφοίbrothers μουof me ἀγαπητοί.loved. οὐχNot ὁthe θεὸςGod ἐξελέξατοchose τοὺςthe πτωχοὺςpoor τῷto the κόσμῳworld πλουσίουςrich (ones) ἐνin πίστειfaith καὶand κληρονόμουςheirs τῆςof the βασιλείαςkingdom ἧςof which ἐπηγγείλατοhe promised τοῖςto the (ones) ἀγαπῶσινloving αὐτόν;him? 6 ὑμεῖςyou δὲbut ἠτιμάσατεyou dishonored τὸνthe πτωχόν.poor (one). οὐχNot οἱthe πλούσιοιrich (ones) καταδυναστεύουσινare using power down ὑμῶν,of you, καὶand αὐτοὶthey ἕλκουσινare dragging ὑμᾶςyou εἰςinto κριτήρια;judgment places? 7 οὐκNot αὐτοὶthey βλασφημοῦσινare they blaspheming τὸthe καλὸνfine ὄνομαname τὸthe (one) ἐπικληθὲνhaving been invoked ἐφ’upon ὑμᾶς;you? 8 εἰIf μέντοιindeed-to you νόμονlaw τελεῖτεyou are finishing βασιλικὸνkingly κατὰaccording to τὴνthe γραφήνscripture ᾿ΑγαπήσειςYou shall love τὸνthe πλησίονneighbor σουof you ὡςas σεαυτόν,yourself, καλῶςfinely ποιεῖτε·you are doing; 9 εἰif δὲbut προσωπολημπτεῖτε,you are showing reception of faces, ἁμαρτίανsin ἐργάζεσθε,you are working, ἐλεγχόμενοιbeing reproved ὑπὸby τοῦthe νόμουlaw ὡςas παραβάται.transgressors.

10 ὍστιςWho-any γὰρfor ὅλονwhole τὸνthe νόμονLaw τηρήσῃ,might observe, πταίσῃhe might trip δὲbut ἐνin ἑνί,one (thing), γέγονενhe has become πάντωνof all (ones) ἔνοχος.one held in. 11 ὁThe (one) γὰρfor εἰπώνhaving said ΜὴNot μοιχεύσῃςyou should commit adultery εἶπενhe said καίalso ΜὴNot φονεύσῃς·you should murder; εἰif δὲbut οὐnot μοιχεύειςyou are committing adultery φονεύειςyou are murdering δέ,but, γέγοναςyou have become παραβάτηςtransgressor νόμου.of law. 12 οὕτωςThus λαλεῖτεbe you speaking καὶand οὕτωςthus ποιεῖτεbe you doing ὡςas διὰthrough νόμουlaw ἐλευθερίας♥of freedom μέλλοντεςbeing about κρίνεσθαι.to be being judged. 13 ἡThe γὰρfor κρίσιςjudgment ἀνέλεοςunmerciful τῷto the (one) μὴnot ποιήσαντιhaving done ἔλεος·mercy; κατακαυχᾶταιis boasting down ἔλεοςmercy κρίσεως.of judgment.

14 ΤίWhat ὄφελος,benefit, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, ἐὰνif ever πίστινfaith λέγῃmay be saying   τιςsomeone   ἔχεινto be having ἔργαworks δὲbut μὴnot ἔχῃ;he may be having? μὴNot δύναταιis able ἡthe πίστιςfaith σῶσαιto save αὐτόν;him? 15 ἐὰνIf ever ἀδελφὸςbrother ἢor ἀδελφὴsister γυμνοὶnaked (ones) ὑπάρχωσινare existing καὶand λειπόμενοιlacking τῆςof the ἐφημέρουdaily τροφῆς,nourishment, 16 εἴπῃshould say δέbut τιςsomeone αὐτοῖςto them ἐξout of ὑμῶνyou ὙπάγετεBe you going under ἐνin εἰρήνῃ,peace, θερμαίνεσθεbe you being warmed καὶand χορτάζεσθε,be you being satisfied, μὴnot δῶτεyou should give δὲbut αὐτοῖςto them τὰthe ἐπιτήδεια(things) upon (the) pleasant τοῦof the σώματος,body, τίwhat ὄφελος;benefit? 17 οὕτωςThus καὶalso ἡthe πίστις,faith, ἐὰνif ever μὴnot ἔχῃit may be having ἔργα,works, νεκράdead ἐστινis καθ’according to ἑαυτήν.itself.

18 ἀλλ’But ἐρεῖwill say τιςsomeone ΣὺYou πίστινfaith ἔχειςare having κἀγὼand I ἔργαworks ἔχω.I am having. δεῖξόνShow you μοιto me τὴνthe πίστινfaith σουof you χωρὶςapart from τῶνthe ἔργων,works, κἀγώand I σοιto you δείξωI shall show ἐκout of τῶνthe ἔργωνworks μουof me τὴνthe πίστιν.faith. 19 σὺYou πιστεύειςare believing ὅτιthat εἷςone θεὸςGod ἔστιν;is? καλῶςFinely ποιεῖς·you are doing; καὶalso τὰthe δαιμόνιαdemons πιστεύουσινare believing καὶand φρίσσουσιν.♥they are bristling up. 20 θέλειςAre you willing δὲbut γνῶναι,to know, ὦO ἄνθρωπεman κενέ,empty, ὅτιthat ἡthe πίστιςfaith χωρὶςapart from τῶνthe ἔργωνworks ἀργήineffective ἐστιν;is? 21 ᾿ΑβραὰμAbraham ὁthe πατὴρfather ἡμῶνof us οὐκnot ἐξout of ἔργωνworks ἐδικαιώθη,was he justified, ἀνενέγκαςhaving borne up ἸσαὰκIsaac τὸνthe υἱὸνson αὐτοῦof him ἐπὶupon τὸthe θυσιαστήριον;altar? 22 βλέπειςYou are looking at ὅτιthat ἡthe πίστιςfaith συνήργειwas working together τοῖςto the ἔργοιςworks αὐτοῦof him καὶand ἐκout of τῶνthe ἔργωνworks ἡthe πίστιςfaith ἐτελειώθη,was perfected, 23 καὶand ἐπληρώθηwas fulfilled ἡthe γραφὴscripture ἡthe (one) λέγουσαsaying ᾿ΕπίστευσενBelieved δὲbut ᾿ΑβραὰμAbraham τῷto the θεῷ,God, καὶand ἐλογίσθηit was reckoned αὐτῷto him εἰςinto δικαιοσύνην,righteousness, καὶand φίλοςfriend θεοῦof God ἐκλήθη.he was called.

24 ὁρᾶτεYou are seeing ὅτιthat ἐξout of ἔργωνworks δικαιοῦταιis being justified ἄνθρωποςman καὶand οὐκnot ἐκout of πίστεωςfaith μόνον.only. 25 ὁμοίωςLikewise δὲbut καὶalso ῬαὰβRahab ἡthe πόρνηharlot οὐκnot ἐξout of ἔργωνworks ἐδικαιώθη,she was justified, ὑποδεξαμένηhaving received under τοὺςthe ἀγγέλουςmessengers καὶand ἑτέρᾳto different ὁδῷway ἐκβαλοῦσα;having thrust out? 26 ὥσπερAs-even τὸthe σῶμαbody χωρὶςapart from πνεύματοςspirit νεκρόνdead ἐστιν,it is, οὕτωςthus καὶalso ἡthe πίστιςfaith χωρὶςapart from ἔργωνworks νεκράdead ἐστιν.it is.

3 ΜὴNot πολλοὶmany διδάσκαλοιteachers γίνεσθε,be you becoming, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, εἰδότεςhaving known ὅτιthat μεῖζονgreater κρίμαjudgment λημψόμεθα·we shall receive; 2 πολλὰmany (things) γὰρfor πταίομενwe are tripping ἅπαντες.all (ones). εἴIf τιςanyone ἐνin λόγῳword οὐnot πταίει,is tripping, οὗτοςthis τέλειοςperfect ἀνήρ,male person δυνατὸςable χαλιναγωγῆσαιto lead by bridle καὶalso ὅλονwhole τὸthe σῶμα.body. 3 εἰIf δὲbut τῶνof the ἵππωνhorses τοὺςthe χαλινοὺςbridles εἰςinto τὰthe στόματαmouths βάλλομενwe are thrusting εἰςinto τὸthe πείθεσθαιto be obeying αὐτοὺςthem ἡμῖν,to us, καὶalso ὅλονwhole τὸthe σῶμαbody αὐτῶνof them μετάγομεν.we are leading across. 4 ἰδοὺLook! καὶAlso τὰthe πλοῖα,boats, τηλικαῦταso big (ones) ὄνταbeing καὶand ὑπὸby ἀνέμωνwinds σκληρῶνhard ἐλαυνόμενα,being driven, μετάγεταιis being led across ὑπὸby ἐλαχίστουleast πηδαλίουrudder-oar ὅπουwhere ἡthe ὁρμὴonrush τοῦof the εὐθύνοντοςone making straight βούλεται·is wishing;

5 οὕτωςthus καὶalso ἡthe γλῶσσαtongue μικρὸνlittle μέλοςmember ἐστὶνis καὶand μεγάλαgreat (things) αὐχεῖ.is bragging. ἰδοὺLook! ἡλίκονOf what size πῦρfire ἡλίκηνof what size ὕληνwood (land) ἀνάπτει·is kindling up; 6 καὶalso ἡthe γλῶσσαtongue πῦρ,fire, ὁthe κόσμοςworld τῆςof the ἀδικίαςunrighteousness ἡthe γλῶσσαtongue καθίσταταιis appointed ἐνin τοῖςthe μέλεσινmembers ἡμῶν,of us, ἡthe (one) σπιλοῦσαspotting up ὅλονwhole τὸthe σῶμαbody καὶand φλογίζουσαsetting aflame τὸνthe τροχὸνwheel/cycle τῆςof the γενέσεωςorigin καὶand φλογιζομένηbeing set aflame ὑπὸby τῆςthe γεέννης.Gehenna. 7 πᾶσαEvery γὰρfor φύσιςnature θηρίωνof wild beasts τεand καὶand πετεινῶνof birds ἑρπετῶνof creeping (things) τεand καὶand ἐναλίωνof things in the sea δαμάζεταιis being tamed καὶand δεδάμασταιhas been tamed τῇto the φύσειnature τῇthe ἀνθρωπίνῃ·belonging to man; 8 τὴνthe δὲbut γλῶσσανtongue οὐδεὶςno one δαμάσαιto tame δύναταιis able ἀνθρώπων·of men; ἀκατάστατονunsettled κακόν,bad (thing), μεστὴfull ἰοῦof poison θανατηφόρου.death-bearing. 9 ἐνIn αὐτῇit εὐλογοῦμενwe are blessing τὸνthe κύριονLord καὶand πατέρα,Father, καὶand ἐνin αὐτῇit καταρώμεθαwe are cursing down τοὺςthe ἀνθρώπουςmen τοὺςthe (ones) καθ’according to ὁμοίωσινlikeness θεοῦof God γεγονότας·having come to be; 10 ἐκout of τοῦthe αὐτοῦvery στόματοςmouth ἐξέρχεταιis coming out εὐλογίαblessing καὶand κατάρα.cursing.

οὐNot χρή,there is need, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, ταῦταthese (things) οὕτωςthus γίνεσθαι.to be coming to be. 11 μήτιNot-any ἡthe πηγὴfountain ἐκout of τῆςthe αὐτῆςvery ὀπῆςpeephole βρύειbubbles up τὸthe γλυκὺsweet καὶand τὸthe πικρόν;bitter? 12 μὴNot δύναται,is it able, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, συκῆfig [tree] ἐλαίαςolives ποιῆσαιto make ἢor ἄμπελοςvine σῦκα;figs? οὔτεNeither ἁλυκὸνsalt γλυκὺsweet ποιῆσαιto make ὕδωρ.water.

13 ΤίςWho σοφὸςwise καὶand ἐπιστήμωνwell knowing ἐνin ὑμῖν;you? δειξάτωLet him show ἐκout of τῆςthe καλῆςfine ἀναστροφῆςconduct τὰthe ἔργαworks αὐτοῦof him ἐνin πραΰτητιmildness σοφίας.of wisdom. 14 εἰIf δὲbut ζῆλονjealousy πικρὸνbitter ἔχετεyou are having καὶand ἐριθίανcontentiousness ἐνin τῇthe καρδίᾳheart ὑμῶν,of you, μὴnot κατακαυχᾶσθεbe you boasting down καὶand ψεύδεσθεbe you lying κατὰdown on τῆςthe ἀληθείας.truth. 15 οὐκNot ἔστινis αὕτηthis ἡthe σοφίαwisdom ἄνωθενfrom upward κατερχομένη,coming down, ἀλλὰbut ἐπίγειος,earthly, ψυχική,soulical, δαιμονιώδης·demonic; 16 ὅπουwhere γὰρfor ζῆλοςjealousy καὶand ἐριθία,contentiousness, ἐκεῖthere ἀκαταστασίαunsettled state καὶand πᾶνevery φαῦλονvile πρᾶγμα.thing.

17 ἡThe δὲbut ἄνωθενfrom upward σοφίαwisdom πρῶτονfirst μὲνindeed ἁγνήchaste ἐστιν,is, ἔπειταthereupon εἰρηνική,peaceable, ἐπιεικής,yielding, εὐπειθής,ready to obey, μεστὴfull ἐλέουςof mercy καὶand καρπῶνof fruits ἀγαθῶν,good, ἀδιάκριτος,not judging through, ἀνυπόκριτος·unhypocritical; 18 καρπὸςfruit δὲbut δικαιοσύνηςof righteousness ἐνin εἰρήνῃpeace σπείρεταιis being sown τοῖςto the (ones) ποιοῦσινmaking εἰρήνην.peace.

4 ΠόθενWherefrom πόλεμοιwars καὶand πόθενwherefrom μάχαιfights ἐνin ὑμῖν;you? οὐκNot ἐντεῦθεν,here from, ἐκout of τῶνthe ἡδονῶνpleasures ὑμῶνof you τῶνthe (ones) στρατευομένωνdoing military service ἐνin τοῖςthe μέλεσινmembers ὑμῶν;of you? 2 ἐπιθυμεῖτε,You are desiring, καὶand οὐκnot ἔχετε·you are having; φονεύετε  you are murdering καὶand ζηλοῦτε,you are being jealous, καὶand οὐnot δύνασθεyou are able ἐπιτυχεῖν·to obtain; μάχεσθεyou are fighting καὶand πολεμεῖτε.you are warring. οὐκNot ἔχετεyou are having   διὰthrough τὸthe μὴnot αἰτεῖσθαιto be asking ὑμᾶς·you; 3 αἰτεῖτεYou are asking καὶand οὐnot λαμβάνετε,you are receiving, διότιthrough which κακῶςbadly αἰτεῖσθε,you are asking for selves, ἵναin order that ἐνin ταῖςthe ἡδοναῖςpleasures ὑμῶνof you δαπανήσητε.you might spend.

4 μοιχαλίδες,Adulteresses, οὐκnot οἴδατεhave you known ὅτιthat ἡthe φιλίαfriendship τοῦof the κόσμουworld ἔχθραenmity τοῦof the θεοῦGod ἐστίν;is? ὃςWho ἐὰνif ever οὖνtherefore βουληθῇshould wish φίλοςfriend εἶναιto be τοῦof the κόσμου,world, ἐχθρὸςenemy τοῦof the θεοῦGod καθίσταται.is putting self down. 5 ἢOr δοκεῖτεare you thinking ὅτιthat κενῶςemptily ἡthe γραφὴscripture λέγειis saying ΠρὸςToward φθόνονenvy ἐπιποθεῖis longing τὸthe πνεῦμαspirit ὃwhich κατῴκισενdwelt down ἐνin ἡμῖν;us? 6 μείζοναGreater δὲbut δίδωσινhe is giving χάριν·favor; διὸthrough which λέγειit is saying ὉThe θεὸςGod ὑπερηφάνοιςto superior appearing (ones) ἀντιτάσσεταιis ranging self against ταπεινοῖςto lowly (ones) δὲbut δίδωσινhe is giving χάριν.favor.

7 ὙποτάγητεBe you subjected οὖνtherefore τῷto the θεῷ·God; ἀντίστητεstand you against δὲbut τῷto the διαβόλῳ,Devil, καὶand φεύξεταιhe will flee ἀφ’from ὑμῶν·you; 8 ἐγγίσατεdraw you near τῷto the θεῷ,God, καὶand ἐγγίσειhe will draw near ὑμῖν.to you. καθαρίσατεCleanse you χεῖρας,hands, ἁμαρτωλοί,sinners, καὶand ἁγνίσατεpurify you καρδίας,hearts, δίψυχοι.two-souled (ones). 9 ταλαιπωρήσατεBe you affected with misery καὶand πενθήσατεmourn you καὶand κλαύσατε·weep you; ὁthe γέλωςlaughter ὑμῶνof you εἰςinto πένθοςmourning μετατραπήτωlet it be turned across καὶand ἡthe χαρὰjoy εἰςinto κατήφειαν·looking downcast; 10 ταπεινώθητεbe you made lowly ἐνώπιονin sight Κυρίου,of Lord, καὶand ὑψώσειhe will put high up ὑμᾶς.you.

11 ΜὴNot καταλαλεῖτεbe you speaking down ἀλλήλων,of one another, ἀδελφοί·brothers; ὁthe (one) καταλαλῶνspeaking down ἀδελφοῦof brother ἢor κρίνωνjudging τὸνthe ἀδελφὸνbrother αὐτοῦof him καταλαλεῖhe is speaking down νόμουof law καὶand κρίνειhe is judging νόμον·law; εἰif δὲbut νόμονlaw κρίνεις,you are judging, οὐκnot εἶyou are ποιητὴςdoer νόμουof law ἀλλὰbut κριτής.judge. 12 εἷςOne ἔστινis νομοθέτηςlaw-putter καὶand κριτής,judge, ὁthe (one) δυνάμενοςbeing able σῶσαιto save καὶand ἀπολέσαι·to destroy; σὺyou δὲbut τίςwho εἶ,are you  , ὁthe (one) κρίνωνjudging τὸνthe πλησίον;neighbor?

13 ἌγεBe going νῦνnow οἱthe (ones) λέγοντεςsaying ΣήμερονToday ἢor αὔριονtomorrow πορευσόμεθαwe will go our way εἰςinto τήνδεthe-but τὴνthe πόλινcity καὶand ποιήσομενwe shall do ἐκεῖthere ἐνιαυτὸνyear καὶand ἐμπορευσόμεθαwe shall be going way in καὶand κερδήσομεν·we shall make gain; 14 οἵτινεςwho οὐκnot ἐπίστασθεyou are knowing τῆςof the αὔριονtomorrow ποίαof what sort ἡthe ζωὴlife ὑμῶν·of you; ἀτμὶςmist γάρfor ἐστεyou are πρὸςtoward ὀλίγονlittle [time] φαινομένη,appearing, ἔπειταthereupon καὶalso ἀφανιζομένη·disappearing; 15 ἀντὶinstead of τοῦthe λέγεινto be saying ὑμᾶςyou ᾿ΕὰνIf ever ὁthe κύριοςLord θέλῃ,may be willing, καὶalso ζήσομενwe shall live καὶand ποιήσομενwe shall do τοῦτοthis ἢor ἐκεῖνο.that. 16 νῦνNow δὲbut καυχᾶσθεyou are boasting ἐνin ταῖςthe ἀλαζονίαιςself-assumptions ὑμῶν·of you; πᾶσαevery καύχησιςboasting τοιαύτηsuch πονηράwicked ἐστιν.is. 17 εἰδότιTo (one) having known οὖνtherefore καλὸνfine ποιεῖνto be doing καὶand μὴnot ποιοῦντι,to (one) doing, ἁμαρτίαsin αὐτῷto him ἐστίν.it is.

5 ἌγεBe going νῦνnow οἱthe πλούσιοι,rich (ones), κλαύσατεweep you ὀλολύζοντεςhowling ἐπὶupon ταῖςthe ταλαιπωρίαιςmiseries ὑμῶνof you ταῖςto the ἐπερχομέναις.(ones) coming upon. 2 ὁThe πλοῦτοςriches ὑμῶνof you σέσηπεν,has rotted, καὶand τὰthe ἱμάτιαouter garments ὑμῶνof you σητόβρωταmoth-eaten γέγονεν,it has become, 3 ὁthe χρυσὸςgold ὑμῶνof you καὶand ὁthe ἄργυροςsilver κατίωται,has been rusted down, καὶand ὁthe ἰὸςrust αὐτῶνof them εἰςinto μαρτύριονwitness ὑμῖνto you ἔσταιwill be καὶand φάγεταιit will eat τὰςthe σάρκαςfleshes ὑμῶν·of you; ὡςas πῦρfire ἐθησαυρίσατεyou treasured up ἐνin ἐσχάταιςlast ἡμέραις.days. 4 ἰδοὺLook! ὁThe μισθὸςwages τῶνof the ἐργατῶνworkers τῶνthe (ones) ἀμησάντωνhaving reaped τὰςthe χώραςland areas ὑμῶνof you ὁthe [wages] ἀφυστερημένοςhaving been made behind from ἀφ’from ὑμῶνyou κράζει,is crying out, καὶand αἱthe βοαὶloud cries τῶνof the (ones) θερισάντωνhaving harvested εἰςinto τὰthe ὦταears Κυρίουof Lord ΣαβαὼθSabaoth εἰσελήλυθαν·they have entered; 5 ἐτρυφήσατεyou lived in luxury ἐπὶupon τῆςthe γῆςearth καὶand ἐσπαταλήσατε,you behaved voluptuously, ἐθρέψατεyou nourished τὰςthe καρδίαςhearts ὑμῶνof you ἐνin ἡμέρᾳday σφαγῆς.of slaughter. 6 κατεδικάσατε,you condemned, ἐφονεύσατεyou murdered τὸνthe δίκαιον.righteous (one). οὐκNot ἀντιτάσσεταιhe is ranging self up against ὑμῖν;you?

7 ΜακροθυμήσατεBe you long in spirit οὖν,therefore, ἀδελφοί,brothers, ἕωςuntil τῆςthe παρουσίαςpresence τοῦof the κυρίου.Lord. ἰδοὺLook! ὁThe γεωργὸςfarmer ἐκδέχεταιis receiving out τὸνthe τίμιονprecious καρπὸνfruit τῆςof the γῆς,earth, μακροθυμῶνbeing long in spirit ἐπ’upon αὐτῷit/he ἕωςuntil λάβῃit might receive πρόϊμονearly καὶand ὄψιμον.late [rain]. 8 μακροθυμήσατεBe you long in spirit καὶalso ὑμεῖς,you, στηρίξατεmake you fix firmly τὰςthe καρδίαςhearts ὑμῶν,of you, ὅτιbecause   ἡthe παρουσίαpresence τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἤγγικεν.has drawn near.

9 μὴNot στενάζετε,you be groaning, ἀδελφοί,brothers, κατ’down on ἀλλήλων,one another, ἵναin order that μὴnot κριθῆτε·you might be judged; ἰδοὺlook! ὁthe κριτὴςjudge πρὸbefore τῶνthe θυρῶνdoors ἕστηκεν.has been standing. 10 ὑπόδειγμαExample λάβετε,take you, ἀδελφοί,brothers, τῆςof the κακοπαθίαςsuffering of bad καὶand τῆςof the μακροθυμίαςlongness of spirit τοὺςthe προφήτας,prophets, οἳwho ἐλάλησανspoke ἐνin τῷthe ὀνόματιname Κυρίου.of Lord. 11 ἰδοὺLook! μακαρίζομενWe are pronouncing happy τοὺςthe (ones) ὑπομείναντας·having remained under; τὴνthe ὑπομονὴνendurance Ἰὼβof Job ἠκούσατε,you heard, καὶand τὸthe τέλοςend Κυρίουof Lord εἴδετε,you saw, ὅτιthat πολύσπλαγχνόςhaving much bowel ἐστινis ὁthe κύριοςLord καὶand οἰκτίρμων.compassionate.

12 ΠρὸBefore πάντωνall (things) δέ,but, ἀδελφοίbrothers μου,of me, μὴnot ὀμνύετε,be you swearing, μήτεneither τὸνthe οὐρανὸνheaven μήτεnor τὴνthe γῆνearth μήτεnor ἄλλονother τινὰany ὅρκον·oath; ἤτωlet it be δὲbut ὑμῶνof you τόthe ΝαίYes ναὶYes καὶand τόthe ΟὔNo οὔ,No, ἵναin order that μὴnot ὑπὸunder κρίσινjudgment πέσητε.♥you might fall.

13 ΚακοπαθεῖIs suffering bad τιςanyone ἐνin ὑμῖν;you? προσευχέσθω·Let him be praying; εὐθυμεῖis being well in spirit τις;anyone? ψαλλέτω.Let him be singing psalms. 14 ἀσθενεῖIs being sick τιςanyone ἐνin ὑμῖν;you? προσκαλεσάσθωLet him call toward self τοὺςthe πρεσβυτέρουςolder men τῆςof the ἐκκλησίας,ecclesia, καὶand προσευξάσθωσανlet them pray ἐπ’upon αὐτὸνhim ἀλείψαντεςhaving greased ἐλαίῳto oil ἐνin τῷthe ὀνόματιname τοῦof the κυρίου·Lord;♣ 15 καὶand ἡthe εὐχὴprayer τῆςof the πίστεωςfaith σώσειwill save τὸνthe (one) κάμνοντα,being tired, καὶand ἐγερεῖwill raise up αὐτὸνhim ὁthe κύριος.Lord. κἂνAlso if ever ἁμαρτίαςsins ᾖhe may be πεποιηκώς,having done, ἀφεθήσεταιit will be let go off αὐτῷ.to him.

16 ἐξομολογεῖσθεBe confessing you out οὖνtherefore ἀλλήλοιςto one another τὰςthe ἁμαρτίαςsins καὶand προσεύχεσθεbe you praying ὑπὲρover ἀλλήλων,one another, ὅπωςso that ἰαθῆτε.♥you might be healed. πολὺMuch ἰσχύειis having strength δέησιςsupplication δικαίουof righteous (one) ἐνεργουμένη.being at work in. 17 ἨλείαςElijah ἄνθρωποςman ἦνwas ὁμοιοπαθὴςof like passions ἡμῖν,to us, καὶand προσευχῇto prayer προσηύξατοhe prayed τοῦof the μὴnot βρέξαι,to moisten, καὶand οὐκnot ἔβρεξενit moistened ἐπὶupon τῆςthe γῆςearth ἐνιαυτοὺςyears τρεῖςthree καὶand μῆναςmonths ἕξ·six; 18 καὶand πάλινagain προσηύξατο,he prayed, καὶand ὁthe οὐρανὸςheaven ὑετὸνrain ἔδωκενgave καὶand ἡthe γῆearth ἐβλάστησενsprouted τὸνthe καρπὸνfruit αὐτῆς.of it.

19 ᾿ΑδελφοίBrothers μου,of me, ἐάνif ever τιςanyone ἐνin ὑμῖνyou πλανηθῇshould be made to err ἀπὸfrom τῆςthe ἀληθείαςtruth καὶand ἐπιστρέψῃshould turn upon τιςanyone αὐτόν,him, 20 γινώσκετω♣let know ὅτιthat ὁthe (one) ἐπιστρέψαςhaving returned ἁμαρτωλὸνsinner ἐκfrom πλάνηςerror ὁδοῦof way αὐτοῦof him σώσειwill save ψυχὴνsoul αὐτοῦof him♣ ἐκfrom θανάτουdeath καὶand καλύψειwill cover πλῆθοςmultitude ἁμαρτιῶν.♣
