God Watches Over Us Because He Loves Us
Proverbs 15:3 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
3 The eyes of Jehovah are in every place,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
The eyes of Jehovah are in every place. Here, the eyes of Jehovah refers the watchful presence of God.
Keeping watch on the wicked and the good. Keeping watch (צָפָה tsaphah) means that he is “watching,” “taking notice of,” examining,” “keeping an eye on.” The wicked and the good (רָעִ֥ים וטוֹבִֽים raim wtovim) are not simply referring to some abstract characteristics but are what and who these people are.
Before Solomon goes on to offer more guidance on the use of the tongue, he presents us with an interesting contrast. “The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3) We can take delight in this because we are confident: “For the eyes of Jehovah run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9) God is well aware if we are doing good. He is also aware of those living a life that includes bad, and he will hold them accountable. All people are accountable to the Almighty, whether they are believers or unbelievers. We want to avoid doing bad because it is the morally right thing to do, not just because we know God is watching. If we are one of the ones doing good, we can be sure that God is well-pleased in our acts of faithfulness.—1 Corinthians 15:58; Hebrews 6:10.
