Philippians 2:12-13 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence[1] only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to act, on behalf of his good pleasure.
Some would argue that the Holy Spirit works in our heart and mind as we “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” (v. 12) I will not discount this in an absolute sense, but it comes across as the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which, I feel, is completely misunderstood. If the Holy Spirit guided and directed us through our mind and heart, we would never make a mistake. I would argue that the inspired, inerrant, authoritative Word of God, the product of the Holy Spirit, guides and directs us. See THE HOLY SPIRIT: All Who Are Led by the Spirit of God Are Sons of God by Edward D. Andrews for a detailed look at How Are We to Understand the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit.[2]
[1] (Gr parousia), which denotes both an “arrival” and a consequent “presence with.”
