Matthew 1:9 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
9 and Uzziah became the father of Jotham, and Jotham became the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah,
The Bible tells us in 2 Kings 15:1-7 that the father of Jotham was Azariah, while in 2 Kings 15:32 and 34, we are told that Jotham’s father is named Uzziah. The Bible critic would claim that the Bible author made a mistake when he listed two different people as the father of Jotham.
However, that assumption would be a bit premature because these two different names actually belong to the same person. Yes, Azariah and Uzziah are, in fact, the same person. There are several occasions in the Scriptures where we are given different names for the same person. For example, in the book of Judges, Gideon is given a second name, Jerubbaal (6:32; 7:1) King Jehoiachin was also known as Jeconiah. (2 Ki 24:6; 1 Chron. 3:16) The chief court official of Babylon assigned Babylonian names to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah new names, that is, Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. (Dan. 1:6-7) We know that Peter was also called Simon. Before Paul became a Christian, he went by his other name Saul. – Ac 13:9.
