Does Jehovah Truly Draw Near to All Who Call on Him in Truth? — Daily Devotional on Psalm 145:18

Psalm 145:18 states, “Jehovah is near to all those calling on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” This declaration is not poetic sentimentality but a precise theological assertion grounded in covenant reality. Nearness to Jehovah is not spatial but relational, defined by access, favor, and responsiveness. Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, Jehovah’s nearness is consistently connected to fidelity, humility, and truthfulness of heart. The psalmist is not describing a vague divine availability to all humanity indiscriminately but a specific nearness experienced by those who approach Jehovah according to His revealed will. Truth, in this context, is not subjective sincerity but alignment with what Jehovah has made known about Himself, His standards, and His purposes.

Calling on Jehovah in truth requires an understanding shaped by His Word. Proverbs 28:9 states that one who turns away from hearing the law, even his prayer is something detestable. This establishes that prayer divorced from obedience is not communion but presumption. Jehovah does not draw near to rebellion, self-definition, or religious emotionalism. He draws near to those who submit themselves to His authority and seek Him on His terms. Psalm 34:18 affirms that Jehovah is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. Brokenness here is not emotional fragility but moral humility, a recognition of one’s dependence upon Jehovah and rejection of self-rule.

Truthful calling also excludes hypocrisy. Isaiah 29:13 records Jehovah’s condemnation of those who draw near with their mouth while their heart is far removed. Nearness is never triggered by verbal formula or religious performance. It is the outcome of covenant loyalty expressed through obedience and reverence. The Hebrew concept of truth includes faithfulness, reliability, and steadfastness. To call on Jehovah in truth is to approach Him as He has revealed Himself, not as one wishes Him to be.

Jehovah’s nearness further implies His active involvement. He listens, responds, corrects, strengthens, and delivers according to His wisdom. Psalm 65:2 identifies Jehovah as the Hearer of prayer, but Scripture consistently qualifies who is heard. The righteous cry out, and Jehovah hears, delivering them from all their distresses, as stated in Psalm 34:17. This is not a promise of ease but of divine attentiveness and purposeful intervention.

For the Christian, this nearness is accessed through accurate knowledge of Jehovah and obedient faith in Jesus Christ. John 14:6 records Jesus’ words that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Truth is now inseparably bound to the Son whom Jehovah sent. To call on Jehovah in truth today is to approach Him through Christ, submitting to His teachings, imitating His obedience, and conforming one’s life to the Spirit-inspired Scriptures. The Holy Spirit does not create mystical nearness apart from the Word but illuminates the Word so that believers may approach Jehovah rightly.

Jehovah’s nearness is not earned by perfection but is granted to those who seek Him honestly, repentant of sin, and resolved to walk according to His standards. Deuteronomy 4:7 asks what great nation has a god so near as Jehovah our God whenever we call on Him. That nearness remains real, powerful, and accessible today, but only to those who call on Him in truth, not merely in desperation or tradition.
