The Steadfast Love and Righteousness of Jehovah
Daily Devotional on Psalm 33:5
Psalm 33:5 — “He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of Jehovah.”
The Nature of Jehovah’s Righteousness
Jehovah’s character is defined by His moral perfection. The psalmist declares that He loves righteousness and justice, revealing not merely what Jehovah does but Who He is. His love for righteousness is not arbitrary but flows from His immutable nature. Because He is righteous, He delights in righteousness. This reflects the unchanging reality that divine morality is not external to Jehovah but originates in His very essence.
Righteousness in this verse refers to that which is upright and in complete harmony with Jehovah’s revealed standards. It is not measured by human conscience or societal approval but by the unalterable truth of His Word. Justice, closely related to righteousness, denotes the application of that standard in dealing with creation. Jehovah never acts unjustly, for His justice is the execution of His perfect righteousness in every circumstance.
Unlike human rulers who often act from bias or corruption, Jehovah’s justice flows from infinite wisdom and impartiality. He cannot be swayed by deceit or bribery; His judgments are pure and exact. Moses affirmed this in Deuteronomy 32:4: “The Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is He.” This immutable standard governs both the cosmic order and the moral laws that sustain creation.
The Earth Filled With Jehovah’s Loyal Love
The second half of the verse declares that “the earth is full of the steadfast love of Jehovah.” The Hebrew word for steadfast love is ḥesed, a term that combines covenant loyalty, mercy, and enduring faithfulness. It describes not fleeting affection, but steadfast commitment to the covenant promises Jehovah made to His people.
The psalmist looks upon the earth—not through the eyes of despair—but through faith in divine providence. Even though evil and suffering are present, the earth remains full of Jehovah’s loyal love. This statement is not naïve optimism but a theological declaration: Jehovah’s covenant faithfulness permeates creation despite human rebellion. His love manifests in the regularity of nature, the provision of sustenance, the preservation of life, and above all, the redemptive plan culminating in Christ.
The apostle Paul echoes this thought in Acts 14:17, saying that Jehovah “did not leave Himself without witness, for He did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” Every sunrise, every breath of air, and every moment of grace testify to His unceasing kindness.

The Covenant Love of Jehovah in Redemptive History
The loyal love of Jehovah is best understood through the unfolding covenants of Scripture. His steadfast love was displayed in His promise to Abraham (2091 B.C.E.), where He pledged blessing to all nations through his seed (Genesis 12:3). This covenant loyalty continued through the Mosaic Covenant (1446 B.C.E.), though Israel often failed in obedience. Yet Jehovah’s faithfulness never failed; He remained steadfast, guiding history toward the fulfillment of His promises.
Ultimately, the fullness of His loyal love appeared in the New Covenant established through Christ’s blood (Luke 22:20). Through His sacrificial death, Jehovah’s righteousness and mercy met perfectly (Psalm 85:10). The same God Who loves righteousness also provides redemption for those who fall short of it. His steadfast love does not ignore sin; it overcomes it through atonement.
Romans 3:25–26 clarifies this divine harmony: “God put forward Christ as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. This was to show His righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins. It was to show His righteousness at the present time, so that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” Jehovah’s ḥesed never undermines His righteousness—it fulfills it.

The Evidence of Jehovah’s Love in Creation and Providence
Psalm 33 celebrates Jehovah as Creator and Sustainer. Verses 6–9 immediately following verse 5 proclaim His creative power: “By the word of Jehovah the heavens were made.” His steadfast love fills the earth because His Word sustains it. Every created thing bears witness to His covenant faithfulness.
The balance of nature, the cycles of rain and harvest, and the predictability of seasons are ongoing reminders that Jehovah governs with benevolent order. As Genesis 8:22 declares, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” Such reliability is an extension of His steadfast love—He maintains His creation for the benefit of humankind and for the accomplishment of His redemptive purpose.
Even in a world marred by sin and corruption, Jehovah’s loyal love remains evident. Humanity’s rebellion has brought death and suffering, yet Jehovah’s patience endures, offering all people the opportunity to repent (2 Peter 3:9). His sustaining power ensures that the message of salvation continues to reach the ends of the earth.

The Call to Reflect Jehovah’s Character
Those who worship Jehovah must reflect His love of righteousness and His steadfast covenantal faithfulness in their own conduct. Since Jehovah delights in righteousness, His people must pursue righteousness in thought, word, and deed. This pursuit is not an attempt to earn divine favor but a demonstration of covenantal loyalty and gratitude for unmerited mercy.
Micah 6:8 captures this duty perfectly: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Jehovah require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” True worship does not consist merely of outward acts of devotion but of inward conformity to Jehovah’s moral will.
The believer’s life becomes a reflection of Jehovah’s steadfast love when he acts with honesty, compassion, and fidelity. This imitation of divine love is practical evidence of transformation through the Word of God. The Holy Spirit does not mystically indwell believers but operates through Scripture to shape their hearts toward righteousness. Thus, when Christians live uprightly and extend loyal love toward others, they bear witness to Jehovah’s own nature manifested through Christ.

Christ as the Embodiment of Jehovah’s Righteousness and Love
Psalm 33:5 finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the visible manifestation of Jehovah’s righteousness and steadfast love. In Christ, righteousness was perfectly expressed; in Him, divine justice and mercy converged. He loved righteousness and hated lawlessness (Hebrews 1:9), and through His obedience unto death, He demonstrated Jehovah’s unchanging moral nature.
Jesus’ ministry revealed the earth filled with Jehovah’s steadfast love—not in abstract form but through concrete acts of compassion, forgiveness, and truth. His healing of the sick, His teaching of moral purity, and His willingness to bear the sins of humanity were all outpourings of divine ḥesed. The cross of Christ stands as the highest revelation of this steadfast love—where divine justice demanded payment for sin and divine love provided the payment.
For believers, Christ becomes both the example and the assurance that Jehovah’s love fills the earth. Through His resurrection, He guarantees the future renewal of creation, when the earth will once again perfectly reflect Jehovah’s righteousness and justice. Until that time, His followers are called to embody His love in a corrupt world, showing forth the light of divine truth through holy living.

Living in the Awareness of Jehovah’s Steadfast Love
Psalm 33:5 invites believers to live daily in conscious awareness of Jehovah’s steadfast love and righteousness. Each morning presents fresh evidence of His faithfulness; each evening testifies to His sustaining mercy. Gratitude, therefore, becomes the natural response to such revelation.
When one recognizes that the whole earth is filled with Jehovah’s steadfast love, despair gives way to hope. Even in moments of suffering or uncertainty, the believer can rest in the assurance that divine justice and mercy are not in conflict but united under Jehovah’s perfect sovereignty. He Who governs the universe with righteousness also guards His people with unchanging love.
The faithful should therefore praise Jehovah not only for what He has done but for Who He is—righteous, just, and abounding in loyal love. As Psalm 33:21 later affirms, “Our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His holy name.” Trust in His name means trust in His revealed character—trust that His righteousness ensures justice and His steadfast love ensures redemption.
