Understanding the Will of Jehovah: A Daily Devotional on Ephesians 5:17

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” — Ephesians 5:17, UASV

The apostle Paul, writing to the congregation in Ephesus, speaks to Christians living in a pagan world filled with moral corruption, idolatry, and spiritual darkness. In this verse, Paul calls for discernment and wisdom that aligns with the divine standard. The expression “do not be foolish” points to the spiritual and moral dullness that characterizes those who walk apart from Jehovah’s revealed truth. To be “foolish” in the biblical sense is not merely to lack intelligence but to lack reverence for God, failing to see life through the lens of His Word.

Paul had just urged believers in the preceding verse to “look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15). This instruction forms part of a larger section in which he contrasts the walk of the old self, shaped by sin and darkness, with the new life in Christ, characterized by light and righteousness. To understand Jehovah’s will is the central pursuit of the mature Christian life. Paul connects wisdom directly with understanding God’s will, indicating that true wisdom is not rooted in human reasoning or philosophical inquiry but in the revealed Word of God.

The will of Jehovah is not an abstract concept but a revealed pattern of righteousness and holiness. The Scriptures unveil His purposes, commands, and moral standards, making it possible for believers to walk in a way that pleases Him. When Paul says, “understand what the will of the Lord is,” he is not referring to an emotional experience, mystical intuition, or private revelation. Instead, he calls for careful study, prayerful reflection, and consistent obedience to the inspired Scriptures. Understanding Jehovah’s will demands diligent effort, a sanctified mind, and a submissive heart.

In the original Greek, the verb translated “understand” (syníete) denotes more than mental awareness. It implies grasping the meaning, discerning implications, and putting that understanding into practice. Thus, the Christian is to comprehend God’s moral directives and then apply them daily. The believer who seeks Jehovah’s will is not satisfied merely with knowledge but aims for transformation through obedience. As Paul elsewhere wrote, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

This understanding does not come naturally. The unregenerate mind is “darkened in its understanding” (Ephesians 4:18). It takes humility and submission to the Spirit-inspired Word to overcome that blindness. A Christian who neglects Scripture will soon lose spiritual discernment. The world’s values subtly replace divine standards, and the believer’s priorities shift from godly devotion to worldly pursuits. Paul’s command, therefore, is both a warning and a call to vigilance. Spiritual wisdom must be cultivated deliberately through continual engagement with the Word of God.

Jehovah has made His will known primarily through Scripture, not through mystical signs or subjective impressions. His moral will—how His people are to live—is clearly stated in His commands and precepts. His redemptive will—His plan to save mankind through Christ—is revealed in the gospel. And His sovereign will—His overarching plan for the universe—unfolds throughout history according to His purposes. The believer’s duty is not to speculate about God’s hidden purposes but to understand and obey what He has revealed. As Moses declared, “The secret things belong to Jehovah our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

To “understand what the will of the Lord is” means living each day intentionally for Jehovah’s glory. The Christian who comprehends His will measures every decision, every conversation, and every pursuit by His Word. Such a life contrasts sharply with the careless and impulsive ways of those who live without reference to God. The foolish man drifts through life, driven by the winds of emotion, culture, and convenience. The wise man, however, anchors his life to the eternal truths of Scripture, allowing them to govern his behavior, speech, and thoughts.

This principle touches every sphere of Christian living. In moral choices, the believer must discern right from wrong based on divine revelation, not human opinion. In relationships, the believer must manifest love, purity, and humility, reflecting Christ’s character. In vocation, the believer must work “as to the Lord and not to men” (Colossians 3:23). In all things, the believer seeks to glorify God by conforming to His will. To know Jehovah’s will is therefore to know His Word. The two are inseparable.

Ephesians 5:17 also carries an eschatological dimension. Paul had reminded the Ephesians that “the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16). This phrase reflects the moral corruption and spiritual peril of the present age, ruled by Satan, “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Because time is short and the moral decay of the world intensifies, believers must redeem the time by aligning their conduct with God’s will. Every day presents an opportunity to either grow in spiritual wisdom or drift toward spiritual dullness. Understanding Jehovah’s will equips the believer to resist deception, false doctrine, and the snares of the Devil.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

In spiritual warfare, ignorance of God’s will is one of Satan’s chief weapons. The Devil thrives where truth is absent. His strategy from the beginning has been to question, distort, and deny God’s Word. When Eve entertained Satan’s subtle question, “Did God actually say…?” (Genesis 3:1), she stepped into deception. Likewise, Christians who fail to know and apply Scripture leave themselves vulnerable to spiritual attack. The only safeguard is to know Jehovah’s will so thoroughly that no falsehood can displace it. The believer who understands God’s will can identify lies instantly and stand firm against temptation.

The foolish man may claim to follow God but neglects His revealed Word. He lives by emotion, cultural trends, or personal desires rather than divine truth. The wise man, however, measures every choice by Scripture. He prays for discernment, studies the Word diligently, and obeys without compromise. His life reflects the principle of Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Spiritual maturity, therefore, is inseparable from understanding God’s will. The Christian who desires to grow in grace must commit to daily study of the Scriptures. It is in the Word that we hear Jehovah speak; it is in obedience that we show we have heard Him rightly. The goal of understanding is always transformation—becoming more like Christ in thought, word, and deed. The foolish man hears but does not do; the wise man hears and acts (Matthew 7:24–27).

Ephesians 5:17 calls every believer to reject spiritual laziness and pursue wisdom through understanding God’s will. This requires consistent prayer, study, meditation, and application. It also requires separation from the corrupt values of the world and a determination to live in the light of truth. To understand Jehovah’s will is to live with purpose, clarity, and holiness in a world that glorifies confusion and rebellion. It is to walk in wisdom when others walk in darkness. It is to live by divine revelation when others live by human speculation.

The call of Ephesians 5:17 remains as urgent today as when Paul first wrote it. The moral decay, deception, and distractions of our age make the pursuit of spiritual understanding indispensable. Christians must not drift aimlessly but must live deliberately, governed by the revealed will of God. The believer who understands Jehovah’s will walks securely, discerns clearly, and lives faithfully. His life becomes a living testimony to the wisdom and glory of the God Who called him out of darkness into His marvelous light.
