Daily Devotional — John 16:2
Scripture:
“They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” — John 16:2, ESV
Context and Meaning
In this verse, Jesus prepared His disciples for persecution that would follow His departure. The reference to being “put out of the synagogues” describes excommunication—the Jewish religious authorities would reject and ban believers in Christ from participation in worship and community life. To a first-century Jew, this was social and spiritual exile.
Jesus’ words go further: there would come a time when His followers’ murderers would justify their actions as religious devotion—believing they were serving God. This prophecy was fulfilled early in church history, notably in Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:1–2), who persecuted Christians before his conversion.

Reflection and Application
The faithful disciple must never assume that obedience to Christ will bring universal approval. The world’s hostility toward truth remains unchanged. When believers proclaim the exclusivity of Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture, opposition arises—sometimes under a false banner of “righteousness” or “justice.”
Yet persecution tests and refines faith. Christ foretold it so that His followers would not stumble (John 16:1). The believer’s response is not retaliation but perseverance. The assurance that our Savior also faced rejection (John 15:18–20) anchors our courage and steadies our hearts.
Today, “being put out of the synagogue” may not mean literal expulsion but social ostracism, loss of employment, or ridicule. Still, Jesus calls His followers to endure, confident that no suffering for His sake is wasted (Matthew 5:11–12).

Prayer
Jehovah, give me courage when I am rejected for standing with Christ. Help me to endure hatred without bitterness and to love truth more than comfort. Strengthen all believers who face persecution today, that they may honor You with steadfast hearts and peaceful spirits. Amen.
Key Takeaway
Faithfulness to Christ often invites persecution, but every trial becomes a testimony when endured in love and truth.
