Daily Devotional on Psalm 68:19

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation.”Psalm 68:19, UASV

Psalm 68 is a triumphant psalm of David, extolling Jehovah’s mighty acts in history and His continual care for His people. Verse 19 captures a profound truth: Jehovah does not merely act in grand, historical deliverances; He is also intimately involved in the daily lives of His people. David recognizes that God’s blessings are not occasional, but continual, and His sustaining power is not limited to extraordinary circumstances but extends to every burden His people carry.

Jehovah as the Burden-Bearer

The phrase “daily bears our burden” emphasizes that God’s care is not intermittent. Unlike human helpers who may falter under the weight of our struggles, Jehovah continually lifts and sustains His people. He is not distant or detached; He enters into the difficulties of His servants, providing strength, endurance, and deliverance. The Hebrew term here suggests both carrying and sustaining, indicating that God not only shares the load but ensures His people do not collapse under it.

This is in harmony with other Scriptures. Isaiah 46:3–4 shows Jehovah declaring, “Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” This reveals His faithfulness from beginning to end, affirming that there is never a season in the believer’s life when God withdraws His sustaining hand.

Salvation as a Present and Ongoing Reality

The verse concludes with “the God who is our salvation.” Salvation is not only a future hope but also a present reality for the believer. Through Christ, salvation has been provided once for all at Calvary, yet its blessings are experienced daily as God delivers His people from sin’s power, Satan’s attacks, and the world’s corruption. Jehovah’s salvation is comprehensive: He rescues, He preserves, and He brings His people to their final inheritance.

This salvation is not earned, nor is it the result of human strength or wisdom. As Ephesians 2:8–9 declares, salvation is by grace through faith, not of works, so that no one may boast. Yet this gracious gift is not merely a static possession; it is an ongoing experience of God’s sustaining power.

The Believer’s Response: Blessing Jehovah

David begins with “Blessed be the Lord.” To bless Jehovah means to praise Him, to exalt His Name, and to live in gratitude for His mercies. Recognition of God’s daily sustaining work should naturally lead to daily thanksgiving and worship. Too often, believers overlook God’s continual help, attributing endurance to their own resilience. Yet when the believer truly recognizes that every breath, every act of perseverance, every spiritual victory, and every provision comes from Jehovah, praise flows abundantly.

This is why Paul exhorts believers to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude is not reserved for extraordinary deliverances but for the daily mercies that uphold us. By blessing Jehovah continually, the believer acknowledges dependence on Him and glorifies His Name before the watching world.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Daily Application

For the Christian, Psalm 68:19 is both a comfort and a call. It reminds us that our burdens are not carried alone. Anxiety, discouragement, temptation, and spiritual warfare are heavy loads, yet Jehovah bears them with and for His people. At the same time, it calls us to live each day with conscious dependence on Him. Prayer should be marked by continual casting of cares upon Jehovah, in obedience to 1 Peter 5:7: “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

This verse also serves as a daily corrective to pride and self-sufficiency. To acknowledge that God “daily bears our burden” is to confess that apart from Him we would falter. As Jesus declared in John 15:5, “apart from me you can do nothing.” Recognizing this truth not only humbles the believer but also strengthens faith, for it assures us that the One who sustains us today will sustain us tomorrow, and ultimately bring us into eternal salvation.

Spiritual Warfare Perspective

Satan seeks to overwhelm believers with burdens—whether through temptation, persecution, or the discouragements of life in a fallen world. He desires that Christians feel crushed under the weight of sin and suffering. Yet Psalm 68:19 assures us that Jehovah is greater than any burden Satan lays upon us. He is not only the God who saves at the end of life’s journey but the God who sustains in the midst of the battle.

This is why Paul speaks in Ephesians 6 of putting on the full armor of God, which is essentially a call to live in the daily strength and provision Jehovah supplies. The believer must not attempt to carry burdens in isolation but must consciously trust in the strength provided through God’s Word, prayer, and the fellowship of His people.

Final Reflection

Psalm 68:19 calls the Christian to daily worship and trust. Each day, Jehovah bears the weight of our struggles, and each day He proves Himself to be the God of our salvation. Our part is to bless His Name, walking in faith and gratitude, confident that the One who sustains us now will sustain us to the end. The believer can face each day with assurance, knowing that no burden is too great for Jehovah, and no need is too small for His care.
