How Do We Know That the Bible Is the Word of God, and Not the Apocrypha, the Quran, or the Book of Mormon?

The question of divine revelation is the most fundamental question that any human being must face, for if God exists, then His Word is the final and absolute authority over faith and life. Many religions claim sacred writings: the Roman Catholic Church includes the Apocrypha within its canon, Islam asserts that the Quran is Allah’s perfect revelation, and Mormonism promotes the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ. However, only the sixty-six books of the Bible—thirty-nine in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New Testament—are the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God. To establish this truth, we must examine the claims of these competing writings through the lens of history, textual integrity, fulfilled prophecy, doctrinal consistency, and divine authority.

The Unique Nature of Biblical Inspiration

The Bible is self-attesting, repeatedly declaring itself to be the Word of God. The prophets prefaced their messages with, “This is what Jehovah says,” and the apostles affirmed that “all Scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Hebrew Scriptures were recognized as the oracles of God entrusted to the Jewish people (Romans 3:2). Jesus Himself testified to the divine authority of the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms (Luke 24:44). The New Testament writings were authenticated by Christ’s apostles and their close associates, written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 16:13). Unlike other so-called sacred texts, the Bible is not merely a record of human reflection about God but God’s own revelation to mankind.

The Historical Reliability of the Biblical Text

The transmission of the biblical manuscripts is unparalleled in ancient literature. The Hebrew Old Testament, preserved by the meticulous care of the Masoretes, has been confirmed by the Dead Sea Scrolls to be virtually identical to copies made more than a thousand years later. The Greek New Testament enjoys nearly 6,000 complete or partial manuscripts, far surpassing any other ancient document in textual support. With such a vast manuscript tradition, scholars have reconstructed the text with 99.99 percent accuracy. By contrast, the Apocryphal writings were never preserved with the same rigorous standard, and the Quran and the Book of Mormon do not enjoy such extensive or reliable manuscript traditions.

The Exclusion of the Apocrypha

The Apocryphal books, written between the Old and New Testament eras, contain historical errors, unbiblical teachings, and no prophetic authority. Jesus and the apostles never cited the Apocrypha as Scripture, though they quoted from nearly every section of the Old Testament. The Jewish people, the divinely entrusted guardians of God’s Word, never accepted these writings as canonical. Even early church fathers such as Jerome rejected them as non-inspired. The Apocrypha advocates doctrines contrary to biblical truth, such as prayers for the dead and salvation by works (2 Maccabees 12:45; Tobit 12:9), which contradict the inspired testimony of Scripture that salvation is by God’s grace alone through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). The Apocrypha was only officially imposed into the Roman Catholic canon in 1546 at the Council of Trent, largely in response to the Reformation. Thus, the Apocrypha lacks the internal, historical, and prophetic credentials of God’s Word.

The Quran and Its Contradictions

The Quran, written in Arabic in the seventh century by Muhammad, claims to confirm the Torah and the Gospel, yet it simultaneously contradicts them. It denies Jesus as the Son of God (Surah 4:171), denies His death on the cross (Surah 4:157), and distorts the nature of salvation by promoting a works-righteousness system. Whereas the Bible was written over fifteen centuries by more than forty authors, harmoniously testifying to God’s unfolding plan of redemption, the Quran was compiled by one man, whose words were collected by his followers after his death. Moreover, the Quran teaches fatalistic predestination and depicts a god who is capricious, inconsistent, and unknowable, unlike Jehovah, who reveals Himself in both holiness and love. The Quran offers no fulfilled prophecy, no internal coherence across centuries, and no trustworthy historical grounding. Its claims collapse under scrutiny.

The Book of Mormon and Its Fabricated Narrative

The Book of Mormon, first published in 1830 by Joseph Smith, purports to be an ancient record of Israelites who migrated to the Americas and became great civilizations. However, there is no archaeological, linguistic, or historical evidence to support these claims. On the contrary, its anachronisms are glaring, referencing horses, steel, and coins in pre-Columbian America where none existed. The language of the book imitates King James English, even though it was supposedly translated from “Reformed Egyptian,” a language unknown to history. The book also contradicts the Bible’s teaching, denying salvation by grace alone and adding a new “gospel,” in direct violation of Galatians 1:8–9. Unlike the Bible’s thousands of manuscripts, the “golden plates” Joseph Smith claimed to use vanished, leaving only his word and that of supposed witnesses—several of whom later recanted. The Book of Mormon is therefore a fabrication, not divine revelation.

The Testimony of Fulfilled Prophecy

One of the clearest evidences that the Bible is God’s Word is its record of fulfilled prophecy. Hundreds of prophecies concerning nations, cities, and individuals have come true with exact precision. For instance, Isaiah foretold the fall of Babylon and even named Cyrus, the Persian king who would conquer it (Isaiah 44:28; 45:1). Micah declared that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), and Daniel’s prophecies laid out the sequence of world empires. Most significantly, the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ fulfilled more than 300 Old Testament prophecies. Neither the Apocrypha, the Quran, nor the Book of Mormon contain such a track record of verifiable predictive prophecy. This sets the Bible apart as divinely inspired.

The Doctrinal Consistency of the Bible

The Bible, though written across centuries and cultures, presents a unified message: Jehovah is the one true God, man is sinful and in need of salvation, and salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. This consistency is unparalleled in human literature. By contrast, the Apocrypha introduces contradictions with the Law and the Prophets, the Quran reverses the Gospel by denying Christ’s deity and atoning death, and the Book of Mormon contradicts the New Testament by introducing a false gospel and a different Jesus. The coherence of biblical doctrine over millennia demonstrates the guiding hand of God in its composition and preservation.

The Transforming Power of the Word of God

Beyond historical and textual evidence, the Bible testifies to itself through its life-changing power. Millions have been brought out of darkness into the light of Christ through its message. It alone exposes the sinfulness of man, reveals the holiness of God, and provides the only true hope of eternal life through Christ’s sacrifice. Neither the Apocrypha, the Quran, nor the Book of Mormon have demonstrated such power to bring sinners into a saving relationship with God, because they are not His inspired Word. The Bible alone is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).

The Final Authority of the Inspired Scriptures

The sixty-six books of the Bible stand alone as the inerrant Word of God. The Apocrypha is excluded because it lacks prophetic and apostolic authority. The Quran fails because it denies the central truths of Scripture and has no historical foundation. The Book of Mormon falls as a human invention with no supporting evidence and contrary teaching. The Bible alone has been preserved by God, confirmed by Christ, validated by prophecy, and demonstrated by its power to save and sanctify. When the question is asked, “How do we know the Bible is the Word of God, and not these other writings?” the evidence points unequivocally to the Scriptures as God’s inspired revelation.
