Daily Devotional: Remembered by God—The Value of the Faithful Few
Rooted in Malachi 3:16 – “Then those who feared Jehovah spoke with one another, and Jehovah listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written before Him of those who feared Jehovah and honored His name.”
A Gathering of the Faithful
In Malachi 3:16, we encounter a compelling snapshot of intimacy between God and the righteous remnant: “Those who feared Jehovah spoke with one another, and Jehovah listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written before Him…” Within just two verses, we witness the power of godly fellowship, divine attention, and eternal reward. This verse beckons us to examine how our conversations, gatherings, and shared reverence before God are not hidden acts but cherished by heaven.

1. “Those who feared Jehovah spoke with one another”
Reverent Fellowship
The term “feared Jehovah” (פוחדים, pochadim) describes more than mere respect—it denotes covenant wisdom, deep reverence, and moral awe. These individuals are neither hypocrites nor casual believers; they stand in implicit recognition of God’s majesty and law.
They spoke with one another—not about gossip, complaints, or shallow small talk, but about Jehovah’s character, purposes, and works. In a degenerate culture where conversation centers on self, they spoke of God. They reminded each other, encouraged, and spurred one another toward life under His name.
Modern Reflection
True faith is strengthened in community. Whether in public worship, small groups, or quiet conversation, God’s people must do more than convene—they must converse about Him. How often do our interactions center not on things earthly, but on things heavenly?

2. “Jehovah listened and heard”
Divine Attention
God does not merely allow or overlook holy fellowship—He listens and hears. This is the same word used when people approach Him in prayer (Genesis 18:17; Psalm 66:19). It denotes active, intentional hearing. God responds with interest, affirmation, and presence.
Applicable Wisdom
Your godly conversations matter. They are audible in heaven. Whether you pray together, study the Word, or confess sin, God is attentively attuned. He never depreciates the reverent speech of His people.

3. “A scroll of remembrance was written before Him”
Heaven’s Registry
A scroll of remembrance connotes careful, permanent recording. God doesn’t just notice these acts—He records them. These written entries symbolize divine approval and form part of the heavenly dossier of the faithful.
Ancient Israelite practice included writing praises, testimonies, and vows in a scroll for God’s remembrance (Nehemiah 10:1; Isaiah 30:8). Here, the act of faithful speech qualifies for ceremonial recognition before God.
Motivation for Believers
Your faithfulness is not in vain. Every intentional fellowship, word of encouragement, act of worship is remembered by God. This assurance strengthens steadfastness in mundane moments.

4. “Of those who feared Jehovah and honored His name”
Faith that Honors
The scroll is not of mere attendance or outward religiosity—it belongs to those who genuinely feared Jehovah and honored His name. Their reverence was lived out in word and deed. They embodied respect for God that permeated their relationships, worship, and testimony.
Clarion Call
Even when service is unseen, when fellowship is quiet, when faithfulness is unnoticed by others—God honors those who honor Him. True glory begins when you honor His name before the world.

Christ: The Ultimate Rememberer
Jesus identifies Himself as the One who sees every cup of water given in His name and promises that none of it is forgotten (Mark 9:41). More so, He carried your name on His heart (Revelation 2:17). Even if earthly ears fail you, His promises hold: “I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).
He is the seal of that heavenly scroll—a Savior who remembers your obedience and rewards it (Hebrews 6:10; Revelation 2:19).

Conclusion: Speak Grace, Receive Grace
Malachi 3:16 reminds us that reverent conversation attracts divine attention and secures heavenly remembrance. A church built on Scriptural fellowship, humble speech, and congregation rooted in fear of the Lord is not obscure—it is honored in heaven. Your faithfulness, though unnoticed by many, is noted by One who cannot lose His own.
May our fellowship differ. Let us speak of God. May our worship resonate. Let us honor His name. And rest in the assurance: God remembers.
