Polytheism, the belief in or worship of multiple gods, has existed in numerous ancient and modern religious systems. It stands as one of the most persistent errors in human history and is thoroughly condemned throughout the inspired, inerrant Scriptures. From the beginning, the Word of God reveals and defends the truth that Jehovah alone is the one true God. This article presents a detailed analysis of polytheism from a biblical apologetics standpoint, using the Historical-Grammatical method and affirming the absolute authority of the inspired text. We will evaluate the origin, spread, and refutation of polytheism according to Scripture.
The Origin of Polytheism in Human History
The earliest chapters of Genesis present no hint of polytheism. Jehovah alone is the Creator: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The first humans, Adam and Eve, knew Jehovah as the one God. Polytheism developed only after mankind’s fall and subsequent dispersion. Following the Flood of 2348 B.C.E., the Tower of Babel incident (Genesis 11:1-9) led to the fragmentation of peoples and cultures. It was during this period that polytheistic systems emerged and spread across Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and other civilizations.
Ancient Sumerians (third millennium B.C.E.) worshipped An, Enlil, and Inanna. Egyptian religion (circa 3000 B.C.E.) exalted gods such as Ra, Osiris, and Isis. The Canaanites had Baal, Ashtoreth, and Molech. Greek and Roman pantheons later followed with Zeus, Hera, Jupiter, and Venus. The consistent pattern is fallen humanity’s rejection of the true Creator for gods of their own making.

The Inspired Scriptures’ Absolute Rejection of Polytheism
The Scriptures assert unequivocal monotheism. The Shema, recited daily by faithful Israelites, proclaims: “Hear, O Israel: Jehovah our God, Jehovah is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4). Jehovah’s unique existence is further declared: “I am Jehovah, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 45:5).
The consistent testimony from Genesis to Revelation rejects any possibility of multiple deities. Polytheism stands as the ultimate offense against the exclusive glory of Jehovah.
Polytheism as Idolatry and Rebellion
Polytheism is not merely erroneous; it is sinful rebellion. Jehovah’s first commandment forbids other gods: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). The golden calf incident (Exodus 32:1-35) demonstrates how easily fallen man turns to polytheistic idolatry, and how fiercely Jehovah opposes it.

In 1 Kings 11:4-8, Solomon’s later apostasy into worshiping Ashtoreth, Milcom, and Chemosh illustrates the devastating consequences of compromising the truth. Such acts brought Jehovah’s judgment on Israel.
The apostle Paul stated that false gods are demonic deceptions: “The sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God” (1 Corinthians 10:20). Therefore, polytheism is more than cultural ignorance; it is active participation in demonic rebellion against Jehovah.

The Futility and Worthlessness of Polytheistic Gods
The Scriptures mock the impotence of false gods. Psalm 115:4-8 says, “Their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see… Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”
Isaiah 44:9-20 exposes the foolishness of fashioning gods from wood or stone. Jeremiah 10:10-11 declares, “But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King… The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”
The prophets of Baal were humiliated on Mount Carmel when they called upon their god with no result, while Jehovah answered Elijah’s prayer with fire (1 Kings 18:20-39).

The Law of Non-Contradiction and Polytheism
Polytheism fundamentally violates the law of non-contradiction: two contradictory claims cannot both be true. Jehovah claims to be the only true God (Isaiah 43:10), whereas polytheistic religions assign divinity to multiple beings.
The apostle Paul warned against such contradictory and deceptive philosophies: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8).
Scripture teaches absolute, exclusive truth. There cannot be multiple ultimate realities or deities.

The Witness of General Revelation
Romans 1:19-20 explains, “What may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
Despite the evidence of creation pointing to one Creator, fallen mankind “exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25).
The heavens declare the glory of the one true God (Psalm 19:1). Polytheism arises from deliberate suppression of this revelation (Romans 1:18-23).
Polytheism and the Condition of Death
The inspired Scriptures also teach that the gods of polytheism are powerless to save. Psalm 49:7-8 declares, “No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them.”
Only Jehovah provides redemption. Isaiah 43:11 states, “I, even I, am Jehovah, and apart from me there is no savior.” No pantheon of gods offers salvation or hope beyond the grave. Jehovah alone holds the keys to life and death.

The Destiny of Polytheism
Scripture foretells the ultimate destruction of all false religious systems. Revelation 18 describes the fall of Babylon the Great, symbolizing the world’s religious empire opposed to Jehovah.
Zechariah 14:9 promises the universal recognition of Jehovah’s sole deity: “Jehovah will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Jehovah, and his name the only name.”
Revelation 21:8 warns, “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.”
All who cling to polytheistic beliefs will face the righteous judgment of Jehovah.
The Biblical Call to Exclusive Worship
Joshua 24:14-15 calls all true worshippers: “Now fear Jehovah and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped… But as for me and my household, we will serve Jehovah.”
The New Testament reinforces this exclusive loyalty: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too” (1 Corinthians 10:21). The Christian must utterly reject every form of polytheistic compromise.

Conclusion: The Final Verdict of Scripture Against Polytheism
The inspired, inerrant Scriptures consistently and authoritatively declare that Jehovah alone is God. Polytheism, whether in ancient paganism or modern religious syncretism, stands condemned. There is no ambiguity: “Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me” (Isaiah 43:10).
The Christian apologist must firmly defend this revealed truth against the deception of polytheistic beliefs and stand unwavering in proclaiming Jehovah as the only true God, whose glory and honor will never be shared.
