How Can Believers Remain Secure in a World Under Satan’s Control?
1 John 5:19 states, “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” This verse presents a stark contrast between those who belong to Jehovah and the fallen world that is under Satan’s influence. It reminds believers of their secure identity in Jehovah while warning them of the reality of spiritual opposition. Understanding this distinction is crucial for maintaining faithfulness and resisting the corrupt influences of the world.
The first part of the verse, “We know that we are children of God,” emphasizes certainty. John does not say, “We hope” or “We think”—he says, “We know.” This confidence is based on the truth that those who follow Jehovah and obey His commandments are His people. 1 John 3:1 reinforces this: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” This identity is not based on human effort but on Jehovah’s grace and the believer’s faithfulness to His Word.
Being children of God means having a relationship with Him and being set apart from the world. Romans 8:16-17 states, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” This status gives believers confidence, assurance, and the hope of eternal life. However, it also means that they will be in opposition to the world, which follows a different ruler.
The second part of 1 John 5:19 states, “The whole world is under the control of the evil one.” This reveals the sobering reality that Satan has a powerful influence over worldly systems, values, and behaviors. Jesus referred to Satan as “the ruler of this world” in John 12:31, and 2 Corinthians 4:4 describes him as “the god of this age who has blinded the minds of unbelievers.” This does not mean that Satan has ultimate power—Jehovah remains sovereign—but it means that the world is largely dominated by sin, deception, and rebellion against Jehovah’s truth.
This reality explains why believers often face hostility, temptation, and persecution. Jesus warned in John 15:18-19, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” True followers of Jehovah will always be in conflict with the world’s values, as their allegiance is to righteousness rather than sin.
Despite Satan’s influence over the world, believers are not without protection. 1 John 4:4 provides encouragement: “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” Jehovah provides His people with the strength to resist evil and remain faithful. James 4:7 instructs, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Victory is possible for those who remain committed to Jehovah’s Word.
Ultimately, 1 John 5:19 teaches that believers must recognize their identity as Jehovah’s children while remaining aware of the world’s fallen state. Although Satan influences the world, those who belong to Jehovah are set apart and protected through their obedience to Him. This verse serves as both a warning and an encouragement—calling believers to remain faithful and steadfast, knowing that their security rests in Jehovah, not in the world.
