What Does It Mean That “God Is Love”?
Understanding the Nature of Jehovah’s Love
The apostle John wrote a profound statement in his first epistle: “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:8). This declaration is often quoted but frequently misunderstood. The phrase “God is love” does not mean that love is the totality of God’s being or that love alone defines him, but rather that love is an essential part of his nature. Jehovah’s love is not sentimental or based on human emotion; it is a deliberate, self-giving, and righteous love that seeks the highest good of others.
This love is evident throughout the Scriptures, from the creation of mankind to the fulfillment of his plan of salvation. When Jehovah created the world, he did so as an expression of his goodness, desiring that humanity would live in harmony with him (Genesis 1:31). His love was also demonstrated in his dealings with Israel. Though they often rebelled against him, he remained faithful, as seen in his words through the prophet Jeremiah: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3). This shows that Jehovah’s love is enduring and not dependent on human merit.
The Sacrificial Love of Jehovah
The greatest demonstration of Jehovah’s love is seen in the sending of his Son. Just a few verses after stating that “God is love,” John further explains, “This is how the love of God was revealed among us: God sent his only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9). This act was not based on humanity’s worthiness, for John continues, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10).
Jehovah’s love is not merely expressed in words but in action. The apostle Paul affirms this truth in Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This divine love is sacrificial, seeking the well-being of others even at great cost. It is not a passive or permissive love but a love that acts to redeem and restore.
Many misunderstand the nature of Jehovah’s love by assuming that it means he accepts all behaviors without consequence. However, true love involves discipline and righteousness. Hebrews 12:6 states, “For Jehovah disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Love does not ignore sin but seeks to correct and guide people into truth. Just as a loving parent disciplines a child for their good, Jehovah’s love includes both mercy and justice.
The Call to Love One Another
Since Jehovah is love, those who belong to him must reflect that love in their own lives. John writes, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:11). Love for others is not optional for a follower of Christ; it is a direct command. Jesus himself emphasized this when he stated, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another just as I have loved you, you also must love one another” (John 13:34). The love of Jehovah is meant to be displayed through the actions of his people.
This love is not based on personal preference or human affection but on a deliberate choice to seek the good of others. Paul describes this love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” This description reveals that love is far more than an emotion—it is a way of life that reflects the very nature of Jehovah.
Living in the Love of Jehovah
To truly understand and experience Jehovah’s love, one must abide in him. John states, “Whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16). This abiding is not a passive state but an active commitment to walk in obedience. Jesus said, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love” (John 15:10). Love and obedience are inseparable; those who love Jehovah will seek to follow his Word.
Jehovah’s love should also give believers confidence. John writes, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:18). This does not mean that believers should lack reverence for Jehovah, but rather that they should not live in terror of condemnation. Those who walk in his love and obey his commands can have assurance of their relationship with him.
Ultimately, to say that “God is love” means that love defines how Jehovah relates to his creation. His love is righteous, sacrificial, and transformative. It calls people to repentance, restores the broken, and offers eternal hope. As believers, we are not only recipients of this love but also ambassadors of it, called to reflect Jehovah’s character in how we live and how we treat others. May we strive to walk in this love daily, showing by our lives that we truly know the One who is love.
