How Does Jehovah’s Loving-Kindness Sustain Us?
The Unfailing Love of Jehovah
In Psalm 63:3, David declares, “Because your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips will praise you.” This profound statement reflects the deep trust and unwavering faith that David had in Jehovah. The Hebrew word for “loving-kindness” here is chesed (חֶסֶד), which conveys steadfast love, mercy, and covenant faithfulness. David, though facing hardship, recognized that Jehovah’s loving-kindness was more valuable than life itself. Life is temporary, filled with difficulties and uncertainties, but Jehovah’s loving-kindness endures forever (Psalm 136:26).
The world often seeks comfort and security in material possessions, relationships, and personal achievements, but these things are fleeting. Even life itself is fragile and uncertain. David, while in the wilderness of Judah, found himself in desperate circumstances, yet he did not lament his physical hardships. Instead, he rejoiced in Jehovah’s unfailing love. He understood that nothing in this life could compare to the assurance of Jehovah’s steadfast care and faithfulness. When people realize that Jehovah’s loving-kindness surpasses everything else, their perspective changes. Instead of being consumed by worry and fear, they are filled with gratitude and confidence in God’s promises.
A Relationship with Jehovah Is Greater Than Earthly Security
David’s words in Psalm 63:3 reveal a truth that applies to all believers—our relationship with Jehovah is far more precious than anything this world can offer. Jesus emphasized this in Matthew 6:25-33 when he taught his disciples not to be anxious about food, drink, or clothing but to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Worldly concerns often distract people from what truly matters, but David’s perspective was fixed on Jehovah’s unchanging love.
The apostle Paul echoed this sentiment in Philippians 3:8 when he said, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Paul had once placed confidence in his heritage, education, and religious status, but he came to realize that these things were insignificant compared to the riches of knowing Jehovah through Christ. Just as David valued Jehovah’s loving-kindness above life itself, Paul considered all worldly gains as nothing compared to the privilege of being in a right relationship with God.
This truth is also seen in the life of Job. Though Job lost everything—his wealth, health, and even his children—he refused to turn away from Jehovah. In Job 19:25-26, he declared, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God.” Job’s faith was rooted in his belief that Jehovah’s faithfulness was greater than any earthly loss.
Praise as a Response to Jehovah’s Loving-Kindness
David’s response to Jehovah’s loving-kindness was not merely intellectual acknowledgment but heartfelt praise. He said, “My lips will praise you” (Psalm 63:3). This was not conditional praise based on his circumstances but an expression of joy in Jehovah’s unchanging nature. Many people struggle to praise Jehovah when life is difficult, but David demonstrates that true worship comes from recognizing God’s character, not just the blessings He provides.
Paul and Silas exemplified this attitude when they were imprisoned for preaching the gospel. Rather than complaining or losing hope, they “were praying and singing hymns to God” (Acts 16:25). Their praise was not based on comfort or ease but on their confidence in Jehovah’s loving-kindness. This kind of worship transcends circumstances and brings a deep sense of peace, knowing that Jehovah remains faithful no matter what happens.
The book of Habakkuk also teaches this lesson. After questioning why the wicked seemed to prosper, the prophet concluded with a statement of unwavering trust: “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food… yet I will rejoice in Jehovah; I will take joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:17-18). This kind of faith recognizes that Jehovah’s loving-kindness is greater than physical provisions, earthly security, or even life itself.
Relying on Jehovah’s Loving-Kindness Every Day
Jehovah’s loving-kindness is not just an abstract concept; it is something that sustains believers daily. David sought Jehovah “earnestly” (Psalm 63:1), indicating that his relationship with God was his highest priority. Those who recognize the greatness of Jehovah’s loving-kindness will continually seek Him in prayer, study of His Word, and obedience to His will.
Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “The steadfast love of Jehovah never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Each day presents new challenges, but Jehovah’s loving-kindness remains constant. Those who trust in Him will find renewed strength and assurance, knowing that His care never wavers.
Jesus also reassured his disciples of this truth in John 10:27-28: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Jehovah’s loving-kindness is not temporary or conditional; it is everlasting and unshakable for those who remain faithful to Him.
David’s words in Psalm 63:3 remind all believers that Jehovah’s loving-kindness is the most precious gift. It sustains in times of distress, provides peace in uncertainty, and brings joy in all circumstances. When believers embrace this truth, their hearts are filled with gratitude and their lips overflow with praise, just as David expressed.
