Who Is This King of Glory, and How Does His Reign Transform Our Lives?
Introduction: The Majesty of the King of Glory
The question posed in Psalm 24:8—“Who is this King of glory? Jehovah, strong and mighty, Jehovah, mighty in battle”—is both a declaration and an invitation to consider the grandeur and sovereignty of God. Jehovah is not only the Creator and Sustainer of all things but also the reigning King who commands the allegiance and worship of His people. This Psalm draws us into a deeper understanding of God’s might, holiness, and eternal dominion, reminding us that our lives must reflect His reign.
This devotional explores the significance of recognizing Jehovah as the King of glory and how His sovereignty impacts every aspect of Christian living.
Jehovah as the King of Glory
The Majesty of His Sovereignty
Jehovah’s kingship is unrivaled, emphasizing His supreme authority over heaven and earth. Psalm 47:2 affirms, “For Jehovah, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth.” This declaration establishes that His sovereignty extends beyond Israel to encompass all nations and creation itself.
In Isaiah 6:1, the prophet recounts his vision of Jehovah seated on His throne: “In the year that King Uzziah died I saw Jehovah sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.” The imagery conveys His absolute holiness and authority, underscoring the reverence due to Him.
The Strength of His Might
The Psalmist describes Jehovah as “strong and mighty” (Psalm 24:8), a characterization that reflects His unmatched power. In Exodus 15:3, after the deliverance from Egypt, Moses and the Israelites proclaimed, “Jehovah is a man of war; Jehovah is his name.” His might is not only displayed in creation but also in His ability to defeat the forces of evil and deliver His people from bondage.
This power is eternal, as expressed in Revelation 11:17: “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.” Jehovah’s might assures believers of His ability to fulfill His promises and execute His perfect will.
The Holiness of His Reign
Jehovah’s kingship is characterized by holiness, setting Him apart from all earthly rulers. Psalm 93:5 declares, “Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Jehovah, forevermore.” His reign is grounded in righteousness and justice, as described in Psalm 89:14: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.”
How Does the King of Glory Transform Our Lives?
Submission to His Authority
Recognizing Jehovah as the King of glory demands submission to His authority. Proverbs 3:5–6 exhorts believers, “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Submission involves surrendering our desires, plans, and understanding to align with His will.
Jesus emphasized this principle in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Prioritizing God’s kingdom in our lives reflects our acknowledgment of His sovereignty.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
The reign of the King of glory calls for worship that is sincere and grounded in truth. Jesus stated in John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Worship is not confined to rituals or locations but encompasses every aspect of life, as Paul instructs in Romans 12:1: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
The Psalms frequently call believers to worship Jehovah with joy and reverence. Psalm 95:6–7 invites, “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before Jehovah, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.”
Trust in His Providence
The King of glory provides for and protects His people. Psalm 23:1 affirms, “Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.” His reign ensures that believers have what they need to fulfill their purpose and grow in holiness.
Jehovah’s providence is also evident in His timing and plans. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Trusting His providence involves patience and faith, knowing that His purposes are always for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28).
Living in Righteousness
The reign of the King of glory calls believers to pursue righteousness in every aspect of life. 1 Peter 1:15–16 exhorts, “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” Holiness is not optional but a defining characteristic of those who belong to God.
Paul further elaborates in Ephesians 4:22–24, urging believers to “put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Conclusion: The Call to Acknowledge and Reflect the King of Glory
The question, “Who is this King of glory?” is both an invitation to know Jehovah and a challenge to live under His reign. As believers, we must honor His sovereignty, worship Him with reverence, trust His providence, and pursue righteousness in all that we do. By doing so, we reflect the character of the King of glory and proclaim His majesty to the world.
Psalm 24:10 concludes with a powerful affirmation: “Who is this King of glory? Jehovah of hosts, he is the King of glory!” Let this truth shape our lives, guiding us to live in submission and devotion to the One who reigns forever.
