13 ΔιὸThrough which ἀναζωσάμενοιhaving girded up for selves τὰςthe ὀσφύαςloins τῆςof the διανοίαςmental perception ὑμῶν,of you, νήφοντεςbeing sober τελείως,perfectly, ἐλπίσατεhope you ἐπὶupon τὴνthe φερομένηνbeing borne ὑμῖνto you χάρινgrace ἐνin ἀποκαλύψειrevelation Ἰησοῦof Jesus Χριστοῦ.Christ. 14 ὡςAs τέκναchildren ὑπακοῆς,of obedience, μὴnot συνσχηματιζόμενοιfashioning yourselves with ταῖςto the πρότερονformerly ἐνin τῇthe ἀγνοίᾳignorance ὑμῶνof you ἐπιθυμίαις,to desires, 15 ἀλλὰbut κατὰaccording to τὸνthe (one) καλέσανταhaving called ὑμᾶςyou ἅγιονholy (one) καὶalso αὐτοὶvery (ones) ἅγιοιholy (ones) ἐνin πάσῃall ἀναστροφῇconduct γενήθητε,you become, 16 διότιthrough which γέγραπταιit has been written ὅτιthat ἍγιοιHoly ἔσεσθε,you will be, ὅτιbecause ἐγὼI ἅγιος.holy.

17 καὶAnd εἰif πατέραFather ἐπικαλεῖσθεyou are calling upon τὸνthe (one) ἀπροσωπολήμπτωςwithout reception of faces κρίνονταjudging κατὰaccording to τὸthe ἑκάστουof each one ἔργον,work, ἐνin φόβῳfear τὸνthe τῆςof the παροικίαςdwelling beside ὑμῶνof you χρόνονtime ἀναστράφητε·be you turned back; 18 εἰδότεςhaving known ὅτιthat οὐnot φθαρτοῖς,to corruptible (things), ἀργυρίῳto silver ἢor χρυσίῳ,to gold, ἐλυτρώθητεyou were freed by ransom ἐκout of τῆςthe ματαίαςvain ὑμῶνof you ἀναστροφῆςconduct πατροπαραδότου,given along from fathers, 19 ἀλλὰbut τιμίῳto precious αἵματιblood ὡςas ἀμνοῦof lamb ἀμώμουunblemished καὶand ἀσπίλουspotless Χριστοῦ,of Christ, 20 προεγνωσμένουof (one) having been foreknown μὲνindeed πρὸbefore καταβολῆςthrowing down κόσμου,of world, φανερωθέντοςof (one) having been manifested δὲbut ἐπ’upon ἐσχάτουlast [part] τῶνof the χρόνωνtimes δι’through ὑμᾶςyou 21 τοὺςthe (ones) δι’through αὐτοῦhim πιστοὺςfaithful εἰςinto θεὸνGod τὸνthe (one) ἐγείρανταhaving raised up αὐτὸνhim ἐκout of νεκρῶνdead (ones) καὶand δόξανglory αὐτῷto him δόντα,having given, ὥστεas-and τὴνthe πίστινfaith ὑμῶνof you καὶand ἐλπίδαhope εἶναιto be εἰςinto θεόν.God.

22 ΤὰςThe ψυχὰςsouls ὑμῶνof you ἡγνικότεςhaving purified ἐνin τῇthe ὑπακοῇobedience τῆςof the ἀληθείαςtruth εἰςinto φιλαδελφίανbrotherly affection ἀνυπόκριτονunhypocritical ἐκout of καρδίαςheart ἀλλήλουςone another ἀγαπήσατεlove you ἐκτενῶς,outstretchedly, 23 ἀναγεγεννημένοιhaving been born again οὐκnot ἐκout of σπορᾶςseed φθαρτῆςcorruptible ἀλλὰbut ἀφθάρτου,incorruptible, διὰthrough λόγουword ζῶντοςof living θεοῦGod καὶand μένοντος·remaining; 24 διότιthrough which πᾶσαall σὰρξflesh ὡςas χόρτος,vegetation, καὶand πᾶσαall δόξαglory αὐτῆςof it ὡςas ἄνθοςflower χόρτου·of vegetation; ἐξηράνθηwas dried up ὁthe χόρτος,vegetation, καὶand τὸthe ἄνθοςflower ἐξέπεσεν·fell off; 25 τὸthe δὲbut ῥῆμαsaying Κυρίουof Lord μένειis remaining εἰςinto τὸνthe αἰῶνα.age. τοῦτοThis δέbut ἐστινis τὸthe ῥῆμαsaying τὸthe (one) εὐαγγελισθὲνhaving been declared as good news εἰςinto ὑμᾶς.you.

CHAPTER 2♠

1 ᾿ΑποθέμενοιHaving put off from selves οὖνtherefore πᾶσανall κακίανbadness καὶand πάνταall δόλονdeceit καὶand ὑπόκρισινhypocrisy καὶand φθόνουςenvies καὶand πάσαςall καταλαλιάς,speaking down on, 2 ὡςas ἀρτιγέννηταright now newborn βρέφηinfants τὸthe λογικὸνbelonging to the word ἄδολονnon-deceitful γάλαmilk ἐπιποθήσατε,long you after, ἵναin order that ἐνin αὐτῷit αὐξηθῆτεyou might grow εἰςinto σωτηρίαν,salvation, 3 εἰif ἐγεύσασθεyou tasted ὅτιthat χρηστὸςkind ὁthe κύριος.Lord.

4 πρὸςToward ὃνwhom προσερχόμενοι,coming toward, λίθονstone ζῶντα,living, ὑπὸby ἀνθρώπωνmen μὲνindeed ἀποδεδοκιμασμένονhaving been disapproved παρὰbeside δὲbut θεῷto God ἐκλεκτὸν(one) chosen ἔντιμονprecious 5 καὶalso αὐτοὶvery (ones) ὡςas λίθοιstones ζῶντεςliving οἰκοδομεῖσθεyou are being built up οἶκοςhouse πνευματικὸςspiritual εἰςinto ἱεράτευμαpriesthood ἅγιον,holy, ἀνενέγκαιto bear up πνευματικὰςspiritual θυσίαςsacrifices εὐπροσδέκτουςwell acceptable towardθεῷto God διὰthrough ἸησοῦJesus Χριστοῦ·Christ; 6 διότιthrough which περιέχειit is having about ἐνin γραφῇScripture ἸδοὺLook! τίθημιI am laying ἐνin ΣιὼνSion λίθονstone ἐκλεκτὸνchosen ἀκρογωνιαῖονtop cornerstone ἔντιμον,precious, καὶand ὁthe (one) πιστεύωνbelieving ἐπ’upon αὐτῷit οὐnot μὴnot καταισχυνθῇ.should be shamed down.

7 ὑμῖνTo you οὖνtherefore   ἡthe   τιμὴpreciousness   τοῖςto the (ones) πιστεύουσιν·believing; ἀπιστοῦσινto (ones) not believing δὲbut λίθοςstone ὃνwhich ἀπεδοκίμασανdisapproved οἱthe (ones) οἰκοδομοῦντεςbuilding οὗτοςthis (one) ἐγενήθηbecame εἰςinto κεφαλὴνhead γωνίαςof corner 8 καὶand λίθοςstone προσκόμματοςof striking toward καὶand πέτραrock-mass σκανδάλου·of fall-causing; οἳwhich (ones) προσκόπτουσινare striking toward τῷto the λόγῳword ἀπειθοῦντες·being disobedient; εἰςinto ὃwhich καὶalso ἐτέθησαν.they were put. 9 ὑμεῖςyou δὲbut γένοςrace ἐκλεκτόν,chosen, βασίλειονroyal ἱεράτευμα,priesthood,ἔθνοςnation ἅγιον,holy, λαὸςpeople εἰςinto περιποίησιν,procuring, ὅπωςso that τὰςthe ἀρετὰςvirtues ἐξαγγείλητεyou might declare τοῦof the (one) ἐκout of σκότουςdarkness ὑμᾶςyou καλέσαντοςhaving called εἰςinto τὸthe θαυμαστὸνwonderful αὐτοῦof him φῶς·light; 10 οἵwho ποτεsometime οὐnot λαὸςpeople νῦνnow δὲbut λαὸςpeople θεοῦ,of God, οἱthe (ones) οὐκnot ἠλεημένοιhaving being shown mercy νῦνnow δὲbut ἐλεηθέντες.(ones) shown mercy.

11 ᾿Αγαπητοί,Loved (ones), παρακαλῶI am encouraging ὡςas παροίκουςdwellers beside καὶand παρεπιδήμουςalien residents ἀπέχεσθαιto be having selves from τῶνthe σαρκικῶνfleshly ἐπιθυμιῶν,desires, αἵτινεςwhich στρατεύονταιare doing military service κατὰagainst τῆςthe ψυχῆς·soul; 12 τὴνthe ἀναστροφὴνconduct ὑμῶνof you ἐνin τοῖςthe ἔθνεσινnations ἔχοντεςhaving καλήν,fine, ἵνα,in order that, ἐνin ᾧwhat (thing) καταλαλοῦσινthey are speaking down on ὑμῶνyou ὡςas κακοποιῶν,doers of bad, ἐκout of τῶνthe καλῶνfine ἔργωνworks ἐποπτεύοντεςhaving eyes upon δοξάσωσιthey might glorify τὸνthe θεὸνGod ἐνin ἡμέρᾳday ἐπισκοπῆς.of inspection. 13 ὙποτάγητεBe you subjected πάσῃto every ἀνθρωπίνῃbelonging to man κτίσειcreation διὰthrough τὸνthe κύριον·Lord; εἴτεwhether βασιλεῖto king ὡςas ὑπερέχοντι,to (one) being superior, 14 εἴτεor ἡγεμόσινto governors ὡςas δι’through αὐτοῦhim πεμπομένοιςbeing sent εἰςinto ἐκδίκησινvengeance κακοποιῶνof doers of bad ἔπαινονpraise δὲbut ἀγαθοποιῶν·of doers of good; 15 ὅτιbecause οὕτωςthus ἐστὶνis τὸthe θέλημαwill τοῦof the θεοῦ,God, ἀγαθοποιοῦντας(ones) doing good φιμοῖνto muzzle τὴνthe τῶνof the ἀφρόνωνsenseless ἀνθρώπωνmenἀγνωσίαν·ignorance; 16 ὡςas ἐλεύθεροι,free (ones), καὶand μὴnot ὡςas ἐπικάλυμμαcovering upon ἔχοντεςhaving τῆςof the κακίαςbadness τὴνthe ἐλευθερίαν,freedom, ἀλλ’but ὡςas θεοῦof God δοῦλοι.slaves. 17 πάνταςAll τιμήσατε,honor you, τὴνthe ἀδελφότηταbrotherhood ἀγαπᾶτε,be you loving, τὸνthe θεὸνGod φοβεῖσθε,be you fearing, τὸνthe βασιλέαking τιμᾶτε.be you honoring.

18 ΟἱThe οἰκέταιhouse (servants) ὑποτασσόμενοιsubjecting selves ἐνin παντὶall φόβῳfear τοῖςto the δεσπόταις,masters, οὐnot μόνονonly τοῖςto the ἀγαθοῖςgood (ones) καὶand ἐπιεικέσινto yielding (ones) ἀλλὰbut καὶalso τοῖςto the σκολιοῖς.crooked (ones). 19 τοῦτοThis γὰρfor χάριςgraciousness εἰif διὰthrough συνείδησινconscience θεοῦof God ὑποφέρειis bearing under τιςsomeone λύπαςgriefs πάσχωνsuffering ἀδίκως·unjustly; 20 ποῖονof what sort γὰρfor κλέοςthing called out εἰif ἁμαρτάνοντεςsinning καὶand κολαφιζόμενοιbeing hit with fist ὑπομενεῖτε;you will be remaining under? ἀλλ’But εἰif ἀγαθοποιοῦντεςdoing good καὶand πάσχοντεςsuffering ὑπομενεῖτε,you will be remaining under, τοῦτοthis χάριςgraciousness παρὰbeside θεῷ.God.

21 εἰςInto τοῦτοthis γὰρfor ἐκλήθητε,you were called, ὅτιbecause καὶalso ΧριστὸςChrist ἔπαθενsuffered ὑπὲρover ὑμῶν,you, ὑμῖνto you ὑπολιμπάνωνleaving under ὑπογραμμὸνunder-writing ἵναin order that ἐπακολουθήσητεyou might follow upon τοῖςthe ἴχνεσινfootsteps αὐτοῦ·of him; 22 ὃςwho ἁμαρτίανsin οὐκnot ἐποίησενdid οὐδὲnor εὑρέθηwas found δόλοςdeceit ἐνin τῷthe στόματιmouth αὐτοῦ·of him; 23 ὃςwho λοιδορούμενοςbeing reviled οὐκnot ἀντελοιδόρει,he reviled in return, πάσχωνsuffering οὐκnot ἠπείλει,he was threatening, παρεδίδουwas giving self beside δὲbut τῷto the (one) κρίνοντιjudgingδικαίως·righteously; 24 ὃςwho τὰςthe ἁμαρτίαςsins ἡμῶνof us αὐτὸςhe ἀνήνεγκενbore up ἐνin τῷthe σώματιbody αὐτοῦof him ἐπὶupon τὸthe ξύλον,wood, ἵναin order that ταῖςto the ἁμαρτίαιςsins ἀπογενόμενοιhaving become off τῇto the δικαιοσύνῃrighteousness ζήσωμεν·we might live; οὗof whom τῷto the μώλωπιwound ἰάθητε.you were healed. 25 ἦτεyou were γὰρfor ὡςas πρόβαταsheep πλανώμενοι,being made to err, ἀλλὰbut ἐπεστράφητεyou were turned uponνῦνnow ἐπὶupon τὸνthe ποιμέναshepherd καὶand ἐπίσκοπονoverseer τῶνof the ψυχῶνsouls ὑμῶν.of you.

CHAPTER 3♠

1 ὉμοίωςLikewise γυναῖκεςwomen ὑποτασσόμεναιsubjecting selves τοῖςto the ἰδίοιςown ἀνδράσιν,male persons, ἵναin order that εἴif τινεςany (ones) ἀπειθοῦσινare disobeying τῷto the λόγῳword διὰthrough τῆςthe τῶνof the γυναικῶνwomen ἀναστροφῆςconduct ἄνευwithout λόγουword κερδηθήσονταιthey will be gained 2 ἐποπτεύσαντεςhaving had eyes upon τὴνthe ἐνin φόβῳfear ἁγνὴνchaste ἀναστροφὴνconduct ὑμῶν.of you. 3 ὧνOf whom ἔστωlet it be οὐχnot ὁthe ἔξωθενfrom outside ἐμπλοκῆςof inweaving τριχῶνof hairs καὶand περιθέσεωςof putting around χρυσίωνof gold (things) ἢor ἐνδύσεωςplacing on ἱματίωνof outer garments κόσμος,adorning, 4 ἀλλ’but ὁthe κρυπτὸςhidden τῆςof the καρδίαςheart ἄνθρωποςman ἐνin τῷthe ἀφθάρτῳincorruptible τοῦof the ἡσυχίουquiet καὶand πραέωςmild πνεύματος,spirit, ὅwhich ἐστινis ἐνώπιονin sight τοῦof the θεοῦGod πολυτελές.of much cost. 5 οὕτωςThusγάρfor ποτεsometime καὶalso αἱthe ἅγιαιholy γυναῖκεςwomen αἱthe (ones) ἐλπίζουσαιhoping εἰςinto θεὸνGod ἐκόσμουνwere adorning ἑαυτάς,themselves, ὑποτασσόμεναιsubjecting selves τοῖςto the ἰδίοιςown ἀνδράσιν,male persons, 6 ὡςas ΣάρραSarah ὑπήκουενwas obeying τῷto the ᾿Αβραάμ,Abraham, κύριονlord αὐτὸνhim καλοῦσα·calling; ἧςof which [woman] ἐγενήθητεyou became τέκναchildren ἀγαθοποιοῦσαιdoing good καὶand μὴnot φοβούμεναιfearing μηδεμίανnot one πτόησιν.terror.

7 ΟἱThe ἄνδρεςmale persons ὁμοίωςlikewise συνοικοῦντεςdwelling together κατὰaccording to γνῶσιν,knowledge, ὡςas ἀσθενεστέρῳto weaker σκεύειvessel τῷto the (one) γυναικείῳpertaining to woman ἀπονέμοντεςportioning off τιμήν,honor, ὡςas καὶalso συνκληρονόμοιjoint heirs χάριτοςof the grace ζωῆς,of life, εἰςinto τὸthe μὴnot ἐγκόπτεσθαιto be being cut in τὰςthe προσευχὰςprayers ὑμῶν.of you.

8 ΤὸThe δὲbut τέλοςend πάντεςall (ones) ὁμόφρονες,like-minded, συμπαθεῖς,sympathetic, φιλάδελφοι,having affection for brothers, εὔσπλαγχνοι,disposed well to pity, ταπεινόφρονες,lowly-minded, 9 μὴnot ἀποδιδόντεςgiving back κακὸνbad ἀντὶinstead of κακοῦbad ἢor λοιδορίανreviling ἀντὶinstead of λοιδορίαςreviling τοὐναντίονthe (thing) in against δὲbut εὐλογοῦντες,(ones) bestowing blessing, ὅτιbecause εἰςinto τοῦτοthis ἐκλήθητεyou were called ἵναin order that εὐλογίανblessing κληρονομήσητε.you might inherit.

10 ὁThe (one) γὰρfor θέλωνwilling ζωὴνlife ἀγαπᾷνto be loving καὶand ἰδεῖνto see ἡμέραςdays ἀγαθάςgood παυσάτωlet him make cease τὴνthe γλῶσσανtongue ἀπὸfrom κακοῦbad καὶand χείληlips τοῦof the μὴnot λαλῆσαιto speak δόλον,deceit, 11 ἐκκλινάτωlet him incline out of δὲbut ἀπὸfrom κακοῦbadκαὶand ποιησάτωlet him do ἀγαθόν,good, ζητησάτωlet him seek εἰρήνηνpeace καὶand διωξάτωlet him pursue αὐτήν.it. 12 ὅτιBecause ὀφθαλμοὶeyes Κυρίουof Lord ἐπὶupon δικαίουςrighteous (ones) καὶand ὦταears αὐτοῦof him εἰςinto δέησινsupplication αὐτῶν,of them, πρόσωπονface δὲbut Κυρίουof Lord ἐπὶupon ποιοῦντας(ones) doing κακά.bad (things).

21 ὃWhich καὶalso ὑμᾶςyou ἀντίτυπονantitype νῦνnow σώζειis saving βάπτισμα,baptism, οὐnot σαρκὸςof flesh ἀπόθεσιςputting away ῥύπουof filth ἀλλὰbut συνειδήσεωςof conscience ἀγαθῆςgood ἐπερώτημαquestioning upon εἰςinto θεόν,God, δι’through ἀναστάσεωςresurrection Ἰησοῦof Jesus Χριστοῦ,Christ, 22 ὅςwho ἐστινis ἐνin δεξιᾷright [hand] θεοῦof God πορευθεὶςhaving gone εἰςinto οὐρανὸνheaven ὑποταγέντων(ones) having been subjected αὐτῷto him ἀγγέλωνof angels καὶand ἐξουσιῶνof authorities καὶand δυνάμεων.of powers.

CHAPTER 4♠

1 ΧριστοῦOf Christ οὖνtherefore παθόντοςhaving suffered σαρκὶto flesh καὶalso ὑμεῖςyou τὴνthe αὐτὴνvery ἔννοιανmental inclination ὁπλίσασθε,arm you yourselves, ὅτιbecause ὁthe (one) παθὼνhaving suffered σαρκὶto flesh πέπαυταιhe has ceased ἁμαρτίαις,to sins, 2 εἰςinto τὸthe μηκέτιnot yetἀνθρώπωνof men ἐπιθυμίαιςto desires ἀλλὰbut θελήματιto will θεοῦof God τὸνthe ἐπίλοιπονleftover upon ἐνin σαρκὶflesh βιῶσαιto spend life χρόνον.time. 3 ἀρκετὸςSufficient γὰρfor ὁthe παρεληλυθὼςhaving gone beside χρόνοςtime τὸthe βούλημαwish τῶνof the ἐθνῶνnations κατειργάσθαι,to have worked down, πεπορευμένουςhaving gone the way ἐνin ἀσελγείαις,deeds of loose conduct, ἐπιθυμίαις,desires, οἰνοφλυγίαις,excesses with wine, κώμοις,revelries, πότοις,drinking matches, καὶand ἀθεμίτοιςunlawful εἰδωλολατρίαις.idolatries. 4 ἐνIn ᾧwhich ξενίζονταιthey are being treated as stranger μὴnot συντρεχόντωνof (ones) running with ὑμῶνof you εἰςinto τὴνthe αὐτὴνvery τῆςof the ἀσωτίαςunsaving course ἀνάχυσιν,pouring forth, βλασφημοῦντες·(they) blaspheming; 5οἳwhich (ones) ἀποδώσουσινwill give back λόγονword τῷto the (one) ἑτοίμωςreadily κρίνοντιjudging ζῶνταςliving (ones) καὶand νεκρούς·dead (ones); 6 εἰςinto τοῦτοthis γὰρfor καὶalso νεκροῖςto dead (ones) εὐηγγελίσθηwas declared good news ἵναin order that κριθῶσιthey might be judged μὲνindeed κατὰaccording to ἀνθρώπουςmen σαρκὶto flesh ζῶσιthey might live δὲbut κατὰaccording to θεὸνGod πνεύματι.to spirit.

7 ΠάντωνOf all (things) δὲbut τὸthe τέλοςend ἤγγικεν.has drawn near. σωφρονήσατεBe you sound in mind οὖνtherefore καὶand νήψατεbe you sober εἰςinto προσευχάς·prayers; 8 πρὸbefore πάντωνall τὴνthe εἰςinto ἑαυτοὺςselves ἀγάπηνlove ἐκτενῆoutstretching ἔχοντες,(ones) having, ὅτιbecause ἀγάπηlove καλύπτειis covering πλῆθοςmultitude ἁμαρτιῶν·of sins; 9 φιλόξενοι(ones) fond of strangers εἰςinto ἀλλήλουςone another ἄνευwithout γογγυσμοῦ·murmuring; 10 ἕκαστοςeach (one) καθὼςaccording as ἔλαβενhe received χάρισμα,gracious gift, εἰςinto ἑαυτοὺςselves αὐτὸit διακονοῦντες(ones) serving ὡςas καλοὶfine οἰκονόμοιhouse administrators ποικίληςof varied χάριτοςgrace θεοῦ·of God; 11 εἴif τιςanyone λαλεῖ,is speaking, ὡςas λόγιαlittle words θεοῦ·of God; εἴif τιςanyone διακονεῖ,is serving, ὡςas ἐξout of ἰσχύοςstrength ἧςof which χορηγεῖis supplying ὁthe θεός·God; ἵναin order that ἐνin πᾶσινall (things) δοξάζηταιmay be glorified ὁthe θεὸςGod διὰthrough ἸησοῦJesus Χριστοῦ,Christ, ᾧto whom ἐστὶνis ἡthe δόξαglory καὶand τὸthe κράτοςmight εἰςinto τοὺςthe αἰῶναςages τῶνof the αἰώνων·ages; ἀμήν.amen.

12 ᾿Αγαπητοί,Loved (ones), μὴnot ξενίζεσθεbe you treated as strangers τῇto the ἐνin ὑμῖνyou πυρώσειburning fire πρὸςtoward πειρασμὸνtrial ὑμῖνto youU γινομένῃoccurring ὡςas ξένουof strange (thing) ὑμῖνto you συμβαίνοντος,stepping together, 13 ἀλλὰbut καθὸaccording to which κοινωνεῖτεyou are sharing τοῖςto the τοῦof the ΧριστοῦChrist παθήμασινsufferings χαίρετε,be you rejoicing, ἵναin order that καὶalso ἐνin τῇthe ἀποκαλύψειrevelation τῆςof the δόξηςglory αὐτοῦof him χαρῆτεyou might rejoice ἀγαλλιώμενοι.being exultant. 14 εἰIf ὀνειδίζεσθεyou are being reproached ἐνin ὀνόματιname Χριστοῦ,of Christ, μακάριοι,happy (ones), ὅτιbecause τὸthe τῆςof the δόξηςglory καὶand τὸthe τοῦof the θεοῦGod πνεῦμαspirit ἐφ’upon ὑμᾶςyou ἀναπαύεται.is resting up.

15 μὴNot γάρfor τιςanyone ὑμῶνof you πασχέτωlet him be suffering ὡςas φονεὺςmurderer ἢor κλέπτηςthief ἢor κακοποιὸςdoer of bad ἢor ὡςas ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος·overseer of what is another’s;
16 εἰif δὲbut ὡςas Χριστιανός,Christian, μὴnot αἰσχυνέσθω,let him be being shamed, δοξαζέτωlet him be glorifying δὲbut τὸνthe θεὸνGod ἐνin τῷthe ὀνόματιname τούτῳ.this. 17 ὅτιBecause ὁthe καιρὸςappointed time τοῦof the ἄρξασθαιto start τὸthe κρίμαjudgment ἀπὸfrom τοῦthe οἴκουhouse τοῦof the θεοῦ·God; εἰif δὲbut πρῶτονfirst ἀφ’from ἡμῶν,us, τίwhat τὸthe τέλοςend τῶνof the (ones) ἀπειθούντωνdisobeying τῷto the τοῦof the θεοῦGod εὐαγγελίῳ;good news? 18 καὶAnd εἰif ὁthe δίκαιοςrighteous (one) μόλιςscarcely σώζεται,is being saved, ὁthe δὲbut ἀσεβὴςirreverential καὶand ἁμαρτωλὸςsinner ποῦwhere φανεῖται;will he appear? 19 ὥστεAs-and καὶalso οἱthe (ones) πάσχοντεςsuffering κατὰaccording to τὸthe θέλημαwill τοῦof the θεοῦGod πιστῷto faithful κτίστῃCreator παρατιθέσθωσανlet them be putting beside for selves τὰςthe ψυχὰςsouls ἐνin ἀγαθοποιίᾳ.doing good.

CHAPTER 5♠

1 ΠρεσβυτέρουςOlder men οὖνtherefore ἐνin ὑμῖνyou παρακαλῶI am encouraging ὁthe συνπρεσβύτεροςfellow older man καὶand μάρτυςwitness τῶνof the τοῦof the ΧριστοῦChrist παθημάτων,sufferings, ὁthe καὶalso τῆςof the μελλούσηςbeing about ἀποκαλύπτεσθαιto be being revealed δόξηςglory κοινωνός,sharer, 2 ποιμάνατεshepherd you τὸthe ἐνin ὑμῖνyou ποίμνιονflock τοῦof the θεοῦ,God, μὴnot ἀναγκαστῶςnecessarily ἀλλὰbut ἑκουσίως,yieldingly, μηδὲnot-but αἰσχροκερδῶςfor disgraceful gain ἀλλὰbut προθύμως,fore-spiritedly, 3 μηδ’not-but ὡςas κατακυριεύοντες(ones) lording down τῶνof the κλήρωνlots ἀλλὰbut τύποιtypes γινόμενοιbecoming τοῦof the ποιμνίου·flock; 4 καὶand φανερωθέντοςof (one) having been manifested τοῦof the ἀρχιποίμενοςchief shepherd κομιεῖσθεyou will carry off for selves τὸνthe ἀμαράντινονunfading τῆςof the δόξηςglory στέφανον.crown.

5 Ὁμοίως,Likewise, νεώτεροι,younger (ones), ὑποτάγητεbe you subjected πρεσβυτέροις.to older men. ΠάντεςAll (ones) δὲbut ἀλλήλοιςto one another τὴνthe ταπεινοφροσύνηνlowliness of mind ἐγκομβώσασθε,tie you on selves with knots, ὅτιbecause ὁthe θεὸςGod ὑπερηφάνοιςto superior appearing (ones) ἀντιτάσσεταιis ranging self against ταπεινοῖςto lowly (ones) δὲbut δίδωσινhe is giving χάριν.grace.

6 ΤαπεινώθητεBe you made lowly οὖνtherefore ὑπὸunder τὴνthe κραταιὰνmighty χεῖραhand τοῦof the θεοῦ,God, ἵναin order that ὑμᾶςyou ὑψώσῃhe might put up high ἐνin καιρῷ,appointed time, 7 πᾶσανall τὴνthe μέριμνανanxiety ὑμῶνof you ἐπιρίψαντεςhaving thrown upon ἐπ’upon αὐτόν,him, ὅτιbecause αὐτῷto him μέλειit is care περὶabout ὑμῶν.you. 8 Νήψατε,Be you sober, γρηγορήσατε.stay you awake. ὁThe ἀντίδικοςadversary (at court) ὑμῶνof you διάβολοςDevil ὡςas λέωνlion ὠρυόμενοςroaring περιπατεῖis walking about ζητῶνseeking καταπιεῖν·to drink down; 9 ᾧto whom ἀντίστητεstand you against στερεοὶsolid (ones) τῇto the πίστει,faith, εἰδότεςknowing τὰthe αὐτὰvery (things) τῶνof the παθημάτωνsufferings τῇto the ἐνin τῷthe κόσμῳworld ὑμῶνof you ἀδελφότητιbrotherhood ἐπιτελεῖσθαι.to be ended upon. 10 ὉThe δὲbut θεὸςGod πάσηςof all χάριτος,grace, ὁthe (one) καλέσαςhaving called ὑμᾶςyou εἰςinto τὴνthe αἰώνιονeverlasting αὐτοῦof him δόξανglory ἐνin Χριστῷ,Christ, ὀλίγονlittle [time] παθόντας(ones) having suffered αὐτὸςhe καταρτίσει,will adjust down, στηρίξει,he will fix firmly, σθενώσει.he will make strong. 11 αὐτῷTo him τὸthe κράτοςmight εἰςinto τοὺςthe αἰῶνας·ages ἀμήν.amen.

12 ΔιὰThrough ΣιλουανοῦSilvanus ὑμῖνto you τοῦof the πιστοῦfaithful ἀδελφοῦ,brother, ὡςas λογίζομαι,I am reckoning, δι’through ὀλίγωνfew [words] ἔγραψα,I wrote, παρακαλῶνencouraging καὶand ἐπιμαρτυρῶνbearing witness upon ταύτηνthis εἶναιto be ἀληθῆtrue χάρινgrace τοῦof the θεοῦ·God; εἰςinto ἣνwhich στῆτε.stand you. 13 ᾿ΑσπάζεταιIs greeting ὑμᾶςyou ἡthe [woman] ἐνin ΒαβυλῶνιBabylon συνεκλεκτὴjointly chosen [woman] καὶand ΜάρκοςMark ὁthe υἱόςson μου.of me. 14 ᾿ΑσπάσασθεGreet you ἀλλήλουςone another ἐνin φιλήματιkiss ἀγάπης.of love.

ΕἰρήνηPeace ὑμῖνto you πᾶσινto all τοῖςthe (ones) ἐνin Χριστῷ.Christ.
