The Bible serves as the primary lens through which we understand the actions of God in the world. This understanding is anchored in the historical-grammatical interpretation of Scripture, ensuring a literal and direct approach to the text. This article aims to elucidate the various dimensions of God’s work as presented in the Scriptures, adhering to a conservative theological perspective.
Creation and Providence
The opening account of Genesis affirms the foundational truth of God as the Creator. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This verse sets the stage for understanding all of God’s subsequent actions in the world. God’s creation was purposeful and reflects His wisdom and power. Isaiah 45:18 states, “For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other.’”
In addition to creation, God’s providence is a continual act of sustaining and governing all things. He upholds the universe by His power (Hebrews 1:3), and nothing happens outside of His sovereign will. Jesus’ teaching on God’s care for the sparrows and the lilies of the field (Matthew 6:26-30) serves as a concrete example of God’s meticulous providence.
Revelation and Communication
God reveals Himself and His will through His Word. The Bible is not merely a historical document but the living word of God (Hebrews 4:12). The Scriptures were inspired by God and are profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). Through the Bible, God communicates His laws, His promises, and His plan for salvation.
Moreover, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh (John 1:14), is the ultimate revelation of God. He is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), and through Him, God’s nature and will are perfectly revealed.
Judgment and Salvation
God’s work in the world encompasses both judgment and salvation. The Bible presents God as a just judge who will not allow sin to go unpunished. The reality of the final judgment is affirmed in passages like Revelation 20:12-15, where all are judged according to their deeds.
Yet, God’s work is also marked by His desire to save. The epitome of this salvific work is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. John 3:16 clearly states, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Salvation is offered as a free gift to those who believe in Jesus Christ, affirming that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
The Role of the Holy Spirit
While the Bible does not teach the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers as a personal presence, it does acknowledge the Spirit’s role in guiding and influencing through the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit played a crucial role in the inspiration of the Bible (2 Peter 1:21) and assists believers in understanding and applying its truths.
The Church and God’s Kingdom
The church is the gathering of believers, called out to live according to God’s will. Ephesians 2:19-22 describes the church as a building founded on the apostles and prophets, with Christ as the cornerstone. The church’s role is to proclaim the gospel and to be a light in the world, reflecting God’s character and kingdom.
The concept of God’s kingdom is central to understanding His work. This kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36), but it breaks into the world through the lives of believers and the spread of the gospel. The ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom will be realized in the new heaven and new earth, where righteousness dwells (Revelation 21:1-4).
In comprehending God’s work in the world, one must consistently refer to the Scriptural narrative. From creation to providence, from revelation to redemption, and in the unfolding of His kingdom through the church, God’s actions are coherent, purposeful, and aimed at revealing His glory and grace. This exploration underscores the importance of the Bible as the definitive source for understanding God’s work, character, and plan for humanity.
