The journey to walk with the Creator is not merely a single step but a continuous expedition filled with decisions that affirm our dedication and devotion to God. It is a journey marked by an evolving relationship with Jehovah, with each step reflecting a decision to know Him, trust Him, and act upon His Word.
The Choice to Begin
The initial choice to walk with Jehovah is a pivotal moment in the life of a believer. It is akin to Abram’s call, where Jehovah said to him, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you” (Genesis 12:1). Abram had to make a decisive choice to leave everything familiar and venture into the unknown because he trusted in God’s promise. This is an illustration of the faith required to start the journey with Jehovah—a faith that is willing to trust in His promises even when the path ahead is not fully revealed.
The Process of Knowing God
To walk with the Creator, one must seek to know Him. The Scriptures are replete with the knowledge of God, and through them, one learns about His attributes, His will, and His purpose for humanity. David’s meditations on the law of Jehovah day and night (Psalm 1:2) demonstrate the commitment to knowing God. It is through such meditation on God’s word that one grows in understanding and becomes equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
The Step of Trust
Walking with the Creator requires trust—a surrender of one’s ways to God’s ways. The Proverbs teach us to trust in Jehovah with all our heart and not to rely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Such trust is exemplified in the life of Joseph, who, despite being sold into slavery and unjustly imprisoned, trusted God’s sovereignty and experienced God’s providential care and ultimate redemption of his circumstances.
The Action of Obedience
The decision to walk with God is authenticated by obedience. It is one thing to profess faith, but it is another to live it out. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). This love is not a mere feeling but is expressed in action—actions that reflect God’s commandments and principles. Obedience is the tangible expression of faith, exemplified by Noah, who acted on God’s warning and built the ark (Hebrews 11:7).
The Choice to Repent
Repentance is an integral part of the decision to walk with Jehovah. It involves a heartfelt sorrow for sin and a turning away from wrongdoing to embrace the ways of God. The story of King Manasseh, who turned from his wicked ways after being taken captive, demonstrates the power of repentance in restoring one’s walk with Jehovah (2 Chronicles 33:12-13).
The Commitment to Persevere
The journey with the Creator is marked by perseverance. The writer of Hebrews encourages believers to run with perseverance the race marked out for them, fixing their eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2). This perseverance is crucial, as the path is often fraught with trials and tribulations that test one’s faith. Job’s unwavering faith amidst profound suffering is a testament to the perseverance required to walk with God.
The Walk of Humility
Walking with God requires humility, a recognition of our dependency on Jehovah. It is understanding that “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (James 4:6). Moses was described as very humble, more than any man on the face of the earth (Numbers 12:3), which was pivotal for him to lead Israel and walk closely with Jehovah.
The Reflection of God’s Character
As one walks with the Creator, there should be a transformation into His likeness. Paul speaks of being transformed into the same image from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). This transformation is a gradual process of character refinement, where traits such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control become more evident in the believer’s life (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Pursuit of Wisdom
Wisdom is fundamental in the choice to walk with Jehovah. It involves the application of God’s principles in practical ways. King Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people, and it was granted to him (1 Kings 3:9-12). A believer must similarly pursue wisdom to navigate life’s complexities in a way that honors Jehovah.
The Anticipation of God’s Kingdom
The decision to walk with Jehovah is fueled by the anticipation of God’s Kingdom. This hope is not a passive waiting but an active living out of principles that reflect the future reality of God’s righteous rule. Jesus taught His disciples to seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33), which means prioritizing God’s righteousness in all decisions.
The Unwavering Focus on God’s Purpose
To choose to walk with Jehovah is to align one’s life with God’s purpose. Paul’s life after his conversion was characterized by a single-minded focus on the purpose to which he was called (Philippians 3:13-14). Similarly, believers are called to live a life worthy of the calling they have received (Ephesians 4:1), continually choosing God’s purpose over personal ambition.
In conclusion, the decision to walk with the Creator is a multifaceted journey that entails beginning with faith, growing in the knowledge of God, trusting in His sovereignty, obeying His commandments, repenting from sin, persevering through trials, embracing humility, reflecting God’s character, pursuing wisdom, anticipating His Kingdom, and focusing on His purpose. It is a journey that is attainable, personal, and transformational—a journey that brings one into intimate fellowship with Jehovah and aligns one’s life with His eternal purposes.
