The ancient port city of Ugarit, located in present-day northern Syria, flourished from the 15th to the 12th century BC as a trade hub. Ugarit was a vassal state to Egypt and later the Hittite Empire, but it met destruction around 1200 BC, possibly due to the Sea Peoples or internal conflict. Ugaritic literature and language provide insight into the city's culture and religion.
