Daily Devotional: Seek Meekness — Zephaniah 2:3

“Seek Jehovah, all you meek ones of the earth, who have carried out his judgment. Seek righteousness, seek meekness. Perhaps you will be concealed in the day of Jehovah’s anger.” — Zephaniah 2:3.

The prophet Zephaniah wrote during a time of deep corruption in Judah, prior to the reforms of King Josiah (640–609 B.C.E.). The people had fallen into idolatry, injustice, and hypocrisy. Jehovah, through His prophet, declared that a day of judgment was drawing near, a day when the rebellious and arrogant would be punished. Yet in the midst of this stern warning, Jehovah extended a tender call to the meek — those who humbly sought Him, obeyed His Word, and pursued righteousness. The command to “seek meekness” is a timeless reminder for all who desire protection and favor from God.

Meekness is not weakness, nor is it a passive or timid disposition. It is the quiet strength of a heart that yields fully to God’s will, trusts His Word, and refuses to exalt self above others. It is the opposite of arrogance, pride, and self-sufficiency. Meekness recognizes God’s sovereignty, accepts His authority, and submits to His righteous standards, even when the world resists. The meek person does not contend with God but walks in agreement with Him. This quality is not natural to fallen man; it must be cultivated through continual submission to Scripture and the shaping influence of God’s Word on the heart.

The prophet’s exhortation carries three commands: “Seek Jehovah,” “Seek righteousness,” and “Seek meekness.” To seek Jehovah means to pursue Him in prayer, study, and obedience. To seek righteousness means to align one’s life with His moral standards, rejecting compromise and sin. To seek meekness is to cultivate humility before Him and gentleness toward others. These three pursuits cannot be separated. One cannot claim to seek God while neglecting righteousness, nor can one claim righteousness without meekness. The proud person may pursue outward morality, but without meekness his heart resists God’s authority.

Jehovah attaches a promise to this exhortation. Zephaniah says, “Perhaps you will be concealed in the day of Jehovah’s anger.” The use of “perhaps” does not imply uncertainty in God but stresses personal responsibility. Salvation and preservation are not automatic; they are tied to faithfulness, humility, and obedience. Those who arrogantly trust in their own wisdom or strength will not escape His judgment, but those who clothe themselves in meekness may find refuge under His protection.

Meekness remains vital for Christians today. Jesus declared, “Happy are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). Paul urged Christians to walk “with all humility and meekness, with patience, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2). James taught that believers should “receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). This quality not only preserves us in times of divine judgment but also equips us to live peaceably with others, to endure difficulties without resentment, and to proclaim the gospel without arrogance.

In daily life, seeking meekness means refusing to retaliate when wronged, answering harsh words with gentleness, and acknowledging our dependence on God in every decision. It means submitting to the authority of Scripture when it corrects us, even if it exposes our flaws. It means giving glory to God rather than seeking recognition for ourselves. The meek person finds strength not in self-assertion but in surrender to Jehovah’s wisdom.

The call of Zephaniah is therefore urgent: “Seek meekness.” In a world dominated by pride, aggression, and self-exaltation, meekness sets apart those who truly belong to Jehovah. It is the pathway to His protection now and the promise of inheritance in His coming Kingdom.
