Be Strong and Courageous: Trusting Jehovah’s Presence

Joshua 1:9“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, for Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go.”

When Moses died and the responsibility of leading Israel fell upon Joshua, the weight of the task must have seemed overwhelming. He was now called to guide an entire nation into a hostile land, confront powerful enemies, and distribute the inheritance promised by Jehovah centuries earlier. It was in this context that Jehovah Himself spoke directly to Joshua, giving him a divine command and assurance: “Be strong and courageous.” This was not a suggestion or an option but a command rooted in God’s presence and faithfulness.

Jehovah’s words to Joshua underscore the reality that human courage is never self-generated. Strength and bravery are not products of self-confidence, nor are they developed by sheer determination. True courage flows from the certainty that God is present, sovereign, and faithful to His Word. Joshua was not asked to rely on his military experience or leadership ability. Instead, he was told to anchor his confidence in the unchanging reality that Jehovah would be with him wherever he went.

This truth remains vital for every believer today. We live in a world filled with hostility to God, where Satan works relentlessly to discourage and weaken those who serve Christ. Fear and dismay are natural responses to life’s uncertainties, especially when we face opposition, temptation, or personal weakness. Yet God calls us to resist fear, not by ignoring difficulties, but by remembering His abiding presence. He is not distant or detached. Just as He was with Joshua, so He is with those who belong to Him through Christ.

To “be strong” means to draw upon spiritual strength that comes through God’s Word. Psalm 119:28 says, “My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to your word.” It is Scripture that sustains us, reminding us of God’s promises, His sovereignty, and His purposes. To “be courageous” means to act in obedience, even when obedience brings risk, opposition, or sacrifice. Joshua’s courage was not measured by the absence of fear, but by his willingness to obey despite fear.

The command also includes the warning, “Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed.” Fear and discouragement are among Satan’s most effective weapons. Fear paralyzes, and discouragement drains perseverance. But both are defeated when believers recall that Jehovah never abandons His own. Romans 8:31 echoes this assurance: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

For the Christian, the presence of God is not a vague sense of comfort but a concrete reality grounded in the finished work of Christ. Jesus assured His disciples, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). The Spirit-inspired Scriptures testify that no circumstance, no enemy, no spiritual force can separate us from God’s love and power.

Therefore, the daily application of Joshua 1:9 is clear: whatever the task, whatever the hardship, and whatever the opposition, the believer is called to trust God’s presence and act in obedience. Whether standing firm in personal holiness, enduring hostility for the sake of the gospel, or persevering through life’s uncertainties, the Christian must reject fear and draw strength from God’s unchanging promise: Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go.
