What Does It Mean to Serve and Follow Jesus?
John 12:26 states, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” This verse highlights the requirements and rewards of true discipleship. Jesus teaches that those who wish to serve him must fully commit to following him, and in doing so, they will be with him and receive honor from Jehovah. This verse calls for a life of faithful obedience, self-denial, and devotion to Jesus’ teachings.
The first part of the verse, “Whoever serves me must follow me,” establishes that service to Jesus is inseparable from following him. The Greek word for “serve” (diakoneó) refers to active service, implying more than just belief—it requires action. Jesus made it clear that those who claim to follow him must walk as he walked. In Luke 9:23, he said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Serving Jesus means obeying his teachings, putting Jehovah’s will above personal desires, and being willing to sacrifice for the sake of righteousness.
Following Jesus is not merely about religious identification—it requires a transformation of life. 1 John 2:6 reinforces this truth: “Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” This means walking in obedience to Jehovah, demonstrating love, humility, and faithfulness. Those who truly serve Jesus do not live for themselves but align their lives with his example.
The next part of John 12:26 states, “And where I am, my servant also will be.” This promise assures believers that faithful service leads to closeness with Jesus, both in this life and in eternity. Those who follow him experience his presence, guidance, and support. Jesus affirmed this in John 14:23: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” The faithful enjoy a relationship with both Jesus and Jehovah, finding strength and encouragement in their walk.
Jesus also promises a future reward—eternal life in Jehovah’s kingdom. John 14:3 states, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” This aligns with the teaching of John 12:26, showing that those who serve and follow Jesus will ultimately be with him in eternity.
The final part of the verse states, “My Father will honor the one who serves me.” This is a remarkable promise—Jehovah Himself honors those who serve Jesus. This honor is not based on worldly status or achievement but on faithfulness and obedience. Proverbs 22:4 supports this principle: “Humility is the fear of Jehovah; its wages are riches and honor and life.” True honor comes from Jehovah, and those who dedicate themselves to serving Jesus will receive His blessing and approval.
Ultimately, John 12:26 teaches that serving Jesus requires a life of faithful obedience and sacrifice. Those who follow him will be with him both now and in eternity, receiving the greatest reward—Jehovah’s honor. This verse calls all believers to wholehearted discipleship, knowing that their labor for Jehovah is never in vain.
