The account of the flood in Genesis 7:11–8:5 provides a detailed chronology of events, offering significant insight into the time periods and methods of timekeeping during this pivotal biblical event. These verses recount the stages of the flood, from its initiation to the waters receding and the ark coming to rest. Careful analysis of these passages reveals the total duration of the flood, the methods by which time was measured, and the implications for understanding ancient and biblical calendars.
The Commencement of the Flood: The Seventeenth Day of the Second Month
Genesis 7:11 specifies the exact date when the flood began: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the springs of the great deep burst open, and the windows of heaven were opened.” This precision highlights the historical nature of the event and situates it firmly within the timeline of Noah’s life.
The second month mentioned here refers to the ancient pre-Exodus calendar, which likely began in the autumn. Based on this reckoning, the second month corresponds to the latter half of October and the first half of November. This timing aligns with the agricultural cycles of the ancient Near East, where the year began with plowing and sowing.
The floodwaters originated from two sources: the “springs of the great deep” and the “floodgates of the heavens.” This dual outpouring of water signifies a catastrophic global event, with subterranean reservoirs and torrential rain contributing to the deluge. The rain continued for forty days and forty nights (Genesis 7:12), marking the first phase of the flood.
The Duration of the Floodwaters: 150 Days of Prevailing Waters
After the initial forty days of rain, the waters continued to rise and prevail on the earth for an additional 110 days, bringing the total to 150 days. Genesis 7:24 states, “And the waters prevailed on the earth for 150 days.” This period includes the time during which the waters began to stabilize after reaching their peak.
The term “prevailed” (gabar in Hebrew) suggests that the waters completely covered the earth, submerging even the tallest mountains (Genesis 7:19-20). This overwhelming flood rendered all terrestrial life outside the ark extinct (Genesis 7:21-23). The waters’ dominance underscores the global scope of the flood and the necessity of the ark as a divinely designed refuge.
The Beginning of the Recession: The Seventeenth Day of the Seventh Month
Genesis 8:3-4 marks the turning point when the waters began to recede: “At the end of 150 days the waters began to diminish. On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.” This date, the seventeenth day of the seventh month, is precisely five months after the flood began.
In the ancient lunar calendar used in Genesis, months were approximately 30 days long. The alignment of the dates (from the seventeenth day of the second month to the seventeenth day of the seventh month) confirms a 150-day period. This consistency demonstrates the reliability of the biblical chronology and the structured nature of the narrative.
The mountains of Ararat, located in the region of modern-day eastern Turkey, provided the resting place for the ark. This significant event marked the beginning of the recession phase, as the floodwaters gradually diminished over the following months.
The Appearance of Mountaintops: The First Day of the Tenth Month
Genesis 8:5 notes another milestone: “The waters continued receding until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible.” This observation occurred nearly two and a half months after the ark came to rest. The progressive recession of the waters reflects the natural drainage of the floodwaters into ocean basins, a process consistent with hydrological principles.
The visibility of the mountaintops would have signaled hope for Noah and his family, as it indicated the nearing end of their confinement in the ark. This phase also aligns with the divine timetable, reinforcing the theme of Jehovah’s sovereignty over the flood’s progression.
The Full Duration of the Flood: 370 Days
The complete timeline of the flood, from its beginning to the time Noah and his family exited the ark, is recorded in Genesis 8:13-14: “By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year, the waters had dried up from the earth. Noah removed the covering of the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was drying. By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the earth was completely dry.”
This chronology reveals a total duration of one year and ten days, or 370 days, based on a lunar calendar. The detailed breakdown includes:
- 40 days of continuous rain (Genesis 7:12).
- 150 days of prevailing waters (Genesis 7:24).
- Approximately 74 days from the ark’s resting on Ararat to the appearance of mountaintops (Genesis 8:5).
- 90 days from the first appearance of mountaintops to the earth’s drying (Genesis 8:13-14).
This timeline demonstrates the comprehensive nature of the flood’s effects and the patience required of Noah and his family as they waited for Jehovah’s command to leave the ark.
Timekeeping in the Ancient Context
The flood account reflects the use of a lunar calendar, where months alternated between 29 and 30 days based on the phases of the moon. This method of timekeeping was widely used in the ancient Near East and formed the basis for later Hebrew calendars. Adjustments, such as the addition of intercalary months, ensured synchronization with the solar year.
The pre-Exodus calendar, observed during Noah’s time, began in the autumn, corresponding to agricultural cycles. After the Exodus in 1446 B.C.E., Jehovah instituted a sacred calendar beginning in the spring with the month of Abib (Nisan) (Exodus 12:2). However, the civil calendar continued to follow the autumn-to-autumn cycle, reflecting the agricultural heritage of Israel.
Theological Significance of the Flood’s Duration
The detailed chronology of the flood highlights Jehovah’s control over time and events. The precise dates and durations emphasize the orderly unfolding of the flood, despite its catastrophic nature. This order reflects Jehovah’s sovereignty and His ability to preserve life even amid global judgment.
The flood’s duration also underscores the necessity of faith and patience. Noah’s unwavering obedience and trust in Jehovah sustained him and his family through a prolonged period of uncertainty. Hebrews 11:7 commends Noah’s faith, stating, “By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household.”
Conclusion
The flood’s timeline, as recorded in Genesis 7:11–8:5, reveals a carefully structured sequence of events spanning 370 days. The precise dating and detailed chronology affirm the historical accuracy of the account and Jehovah’s sovereignty over the natural and supernatural aspects of the flood. This narrative serves as a reminder of Jehovah’s justice, mercy, and faithfulness, offering lessons in patience, obedience, and trust in His provision.
