How Can We Fully Trust in God Amid Life’s Difficulties?
Understanding the importance of trusting God through life’s difficulties requires a thoughtful study of Scripture. Trust is not a passive experience but an active reliance on the truth of God’s Word and His unchanging character. This devotional will explore a less commonly cited passage, Jeremiah 17:7–8, which declares, “Blessed is the man who trusts in Jehovah, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” The imagery here beautifully illustrates the spiritual vitality that comes from unwavering trust in God, even when circumstances seem bleak.
The essence of trusting God is deeply rooted in His revealed Word. By examining Jeremiah 17:7–8 and its context within the broader biblical narrative, we can develop a profound understanding of how Scripture equips believers to navigate life’s uncertainties and maintain faithfulness.
The Nature of Trusting God
In Jeremiah 17, the prophet contrasts those who trust in human strength with those who rely on God. Verse 5 warns of the curse upon the one who “trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from God.” This sharp delineation underscores the futility of placing ultimate confidence in human systems, wisdom, or abilities. The foundation of trust in God lies in acknowledging His sovereignty, goodness, and faithfulness. Psalm 118:8 reminds us, “It is better to take refuge in Jehovah than to trust in humans.” This passage affirms that trust must be anchored in the One who never fails.
Trusting God is more than intellectual assent; it is a deliberate decision to lean on Him in all circumstances. Proverbs 3:5–6 commands, “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Submission to God requires humility, a recognition that our finite understanding cannot compare to His infinite wisdom. When believers surrender their anxieties and uncertainties to Jehovah, they find stability and guidance through His Word.
The Blessings of Trusting God
Jeremiah 17:7–8 promises blessings to those who trust in God. The imagery of a tree planted by water conveys the stability, growth, and fruitfulness that result from a life grounded in God. The tree’s ability to thrive even during drought illustrates the resilience that comes from spiritual nourishment found in Scripture. Jesus echoes this principle in Matthew 7:24–27, where he describes the wise man who builds his house on the rock. Those who trust and obey God are not immune to life’s difficulties, but their foundation ensures they will not be shaken.
The psalmist affirms this truth in Psalm 1:1–3, which describes the blessedness of the man who delights in the law of God and meditates on it day and night. Like the tree in Jeremiah, this man prospers because his life is deeply rooted in God’s Word. Such prosperity is not defined by material success but by spiritual fruitfulness and the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Trusting God transforms the believer’s perspective, enabling them to experience contentment and hope regardless of external circumstances.
Overcoming Life’s Difficulties Through Trust in God
Life’s difficulties often challenge our faith and reveal the depth of our trust in God. James 1:2–4 encourages believers to “consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” While God does not test anyone with evil (James 1:13), He uses difficulties to refine character and strengthen reliance on His Word.
The life of Job exemplifies trust in the midst of adversity. Despite losing his possessions, health, and family, Job declared, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15). Job’s unwavering trust in God was rooted in his understanding of God’s righteousness and ultimate justice. Similarly, the apostle Paul endured numerous hardships yet proclaimed, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). Paul’s confidence stemmed from his assurance that Jehovah’s grace was sufficient for every situation (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Believers today can draw strength from these examples, knowing that God remains faithful. Psalm 46:1 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” This assurance invites believers to cast their burdens upon God, trusting that He cares for them (1 Peter 5:7).
Cultivating Trust Through Scripture and Prayer
The cultivation of trust in God requires intentional engagement with Scripture and consistent prayer. Romans 10:17 states, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” Immersing oneself in God’s Word provides the knowledge and perspective necessary to develop trust. The psalmist prays, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105), affirming the guidance and clarity that Scripture offers.
Prayer is another vital component of building trust in God. Philippians 4:6–7 exhorts believers, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Through prayer, believers express dependence on God and align their desires with His will.
Trusting God also involves remembering His faithfulness in the past. Deuteronomy 7:9 reminds us, “Know therefore that Jehovah your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” Reflecting on God’s steadfast love and fulfilled promises strengthens confidence in His ability to sustain and deliver His people.
Trusting God in the Face of Fear and Uncertainty
Fear and uncertainty often tempt believers to doubt God’s provision and care. However, Isaiah 41:10 offers a powerful reassurance: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This promise highlights God’s personal involvement in the lives of His people and His commitment to their well-being.
The story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt illustrates God’s faithfulness in the face of overwhelming challenges. Despite their fear at the Red Sea, Moses encouraged them, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance Jehovah will bring you today” (Exodus 14:13). Jehovah’s miraculous intervention demonstrated His power to save and reinforced the importance of trusting Him completely.
In the New Testament, Jesus addresses fear and anxiety in Matthew 6:25–34, urging believers to trust in God’s provision. He assures them that their heavenly Father knows their needs and will provide for them. This passage challenges believers to prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness, trusting that all other needs will be met.
Conclusion
Trusting God amid life’s difficulties is an ongoing journey of faith and dependence on His Word. Jeremiah 17:7–8 reminds believers of the blessings and stability that come from placing confidence in God. By grounding their trust in Scripture, engaging in prayer, and reflecting on God’s faithfulness, believers can navigate challenges with peace and assurance. Trust in God is not a fleeting emotion but a steadfast commitment to rely on Him as the source of strength and hope.
