Many believers approach this question by searching for an individualized roadmap—an inner voice, a mystical experience, or a specific feeling that supposedly reveals God’s will. Scripture never directs Christians to find guidance through subjective impressions. Instead, the Bible reveals God’s plan through clear, inspired teaching grounded in creation, covenant, redemption, and the future hope of Christ’s kingdom. To understand God’s purpose for human life, we must use the historical-grammatical method, returning to the earliest revelation of God’s intent for humanity and tracing that purpose through Scripture.
God’s plan is not a hidden, mysterious blueprint that individuals must struggle to decode. It is a revealed purpose, consistent from Genesis to Revelation. When understood correctly, God’s guidance becomes clear—not through emotional intuition, but through accurate knowledge (epignōsis) of His Word.
God’s Original Purpose for Humanity in the Garden of Eden
Humans Were Created to Live Forever on Earth Under God’s Sovereign Rule
Jehovah created the earth to be inhabited permanently (Isaiah 45:18). The opening chapters of Genesis reveal humanity’s intended role: to live forever, multiply, fill the earth, care for it, and exercise righteous dominion. God formed Adam and Eve as perfect humans placed in a perfect environment with a mandate to extend Edenic conditions across the globe. This purpose involved obedience, relationship, stewardship, and worship.
Notably, God’s plan did not involve humans going to heaven. Instead, He created earthly life as the intended sphere for humanity. Eternal life on earth—not mystical relocation to heaven—was God’s purpose.
Satan Did Not Destroy or Cancel God’s Purpose
The rebellion in Eden disrupted humanity’s relationship with God, introducing imperfection, corruption, and death. But Satan did not thwart God’s plan. Jehovah’s purpose stands unaltered. Scripture repeatedly affirms that God will accomplish all His will. The fall introduced the need for redemption, judgment, and restoration, but it did not eliminate God’s intention for humanity to inhabit a righteous earth under His rule.
The rest of Scripture is the unfolding of God’s plan to restore what was lost and to bring creation back to His original design.
God’s Plan Moves Toward Restoration, Not Abandonment
A Select Group Goes to Heaven With Christ to Rule for a Thousand Years
The New Testament reveals that a small number of faithful believers will join Jesus Christ in heaven to serve as kings, priests, and judges during His millennial reign. These individuals form a heavenly government, assisting Christ in restoring the earth to God’s intended order.
This group is small compared to the entire body of redeemed humanity. Their role is not the general Christian destiny but a special assignment. Heaven is the destination of those chosen for this unique purpose—not for the vast majority of obedient believers.
Most of the Redeemed Will Enjoy Life on a Restored Earth
Scripture consistently affirms that God will restore the earth to Eden-like conditions and that righteous humanity will live forever in peace, righteousness, and abundance under Christ’s kingly rule. This aligns perfectly with the original purpose revealed in Genesis and reaffirmed throughout prophetic Scripture.
Christ’s kingdom does not abandon the planet; it restores it. Jehovah’s purpose remains intact.
God’s Purpose for True Christians Today
God’s Will Is Clearly Revealed in Scripture
Many people ask, “What is God’s will for my life?” without realizing that Jesus already answered this question. Matthew 7:21–23 provides one of the most sobering teachings in the Gospels. Jesus warns that many who call Him “Lord” will be rejected because they did not do the will of the Father. The key question becomes: What exactly is the Father’s will for Christians?
The Will of the Father: Obedience to Scripture, Not Emotional Experience
Jesus identifies the Father’s will as active obedience to His teachings. Those rejected in Matthew 7:23 were involved in religious works, emotional enthusiasm, and outward displays—but they lacked obedience to Christ’s actual instructions.
The Father’s will includes:
-
Hearing and obeying Christ’s teachings.
Christians must shape their beliefs and actions according to the inspired Word, not personal preferences or cultural pressures. -
Pursuing holiness and righteousness.
Moral purity and integrity reflect God’s character and distinguish true believers from superficial followers. -
Participating in the spread of the gospel.
Evangelism is not optional. It is part of God’s will for every Christian. -
Rejecting false teachings and doctrinal compromise.
Jesus warns repeatedly about deception. Accurate knowledge protects believers from being led astray. -
Persevering faithfully to the end.
Salvation is a path, not a static condition. Endurance is essential.
Doing the Father’s will means living in obedience to Scripture. A believer who ignores Jesus’ teachings—regardless of profession or activity—cannot expect to hear anything but “I never knew you.”
How God Guides Christians Today
God Guides Only Through His Written Word
Scripture does not teach that God reveals personal directions through impressions, visions, or inward voices. The Holy Spirit guides believers through the Scriptures He inspired. God’s guidance is objective, not subjective; clear, not mystical. When Christians saturate their minds with the Word, they acquire wisdom to make righteous decisions.
Guidance is found in:
-
Direct commands
-
Universal principles
-
Christ’s teachings
-
Apostolic instructions
-
Wisdom literature
-
The example of Christ
God’s guidance is not hidden. It is revealed.
God’s Moral Will Applies to Every Decision
Scripture provides moral boundaries that govern all behavior. The believer must ask: Does this decision violate any biblical command or principle? If so, it is not God’s will. God never guides someone contrary to Scripture.
God’s Wisdom Shapes Choices Where Scripture Does Not Give Specific Instructions
Many life choices—career, location, marriage, timing—are not directly commanded in Scripture. In these cases, God’s guidance operates through principles:
-
Wisdom
-
Stewardship
-
Holiness
-
Responsibility
-
Discernment
A believer who lives obediently within biblical parameters and uses sanctified wisdom can make decisions confidently, knowing he is walking within God’s will.
God’s Purpose for Every Christian: Conformity to Christ
The Goal of Christian Life Is Becoming Christlike
God’s purpose is not to engineer personalized life-plans but to transform believers into the likeness of His Son. This occurs through obedience, endurance, and growth in accurate knowledge. Conformity to Christ includes:
-
Humility
-
Holiness
-
Submission to Scripture
-
Self-denial
-
Love grounded in truth
-
Evangelistic zeal
-
Faithfulness unto death
Christlikeness prepares believers for their future roles in Christ’s kingdom and ensures they do not fall under the judgment of Matthew 7:23.
The Christian Life Is a Path of Faithfulness, Not a Quest for Personal Fulfillment
Modern culture emphasizes personal destiny, self-expression, and individual purpose. Scripture emphasizes obedience, holiness, endurance, and devotion to God’s revealed will. God’s purpose is not to fulfill personal dreams but to prepare believers for eternal life in His restored creation.
How to Avoid the Tragedy of Matthew 7:21–23
Understand That Religious Activity Does Not Equal Obedience
Many professing Christians today base their confidence on emotion, experience, or involvement—not on obedience. Jesus warns that individuals may preach, serve, or demonstrate religious passion while still being rejected.
Build Life on Christ’s Teachings
Jesus follows Matthew 7:23 with the parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock. The rock is obedience to Christ’s words. Those who hear without obeying collapse. True discipleship demands consistent practice of Scripture.
Examine Life by the Word of God
Believers must regularly compare their beliefs and behavior to Scripture. Accurate knowledge protects against deception. A Christian who embraces doctrinal purity, moral integrity, and active obedience can face Christ with confidence.
God’s Plan for Humanity Fulfilled at Christ’s Return
The Restoration of God’s Original Purpose
Christ will establish His kingdom, restoring the earth, resurrecting the dead, and fulfilling God’s original design for humanity. Those who endure faithfully will receive eternal life on earth or reign with Christ in heaven, depending on their calling.
God’s Will for Believers Today
Until Christ returns, the believer’s purpose is clear:
-
Obey Scripture
-
Conform to Christ
-
Live in holiness
-
Proclaim the gospel
-
Resist this wicked age
-
Persevere to the end
This is the revealed will of God. The believer who lives according to Scripture does not need to fear hearing “I never knew you.”
