CHAPTER 1♠

5 καὶAnd αὐτὸvery τοῦτοthis (thing) δὲbut σπουδὴνspeedup πᾶσανall παρεισενέγκαντεςhaving brought in beside ἐπιχορηγήσατεsupply you upon ἐνin τῇto the πίστειfaith ὑμῶνof you τὴνthe ἀρετήν,virtue, ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe ἀρετῇvirtue τὴνthe γνῶσιν,knowledge, 6 ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe γνώσειknowledge τὴνthe ἐγκράτειαν,self-control, ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe ἐγκρατείᾳself-control τὴνthe ὑπομονήν,endurance, ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe ὑπομονῇendurance τὴνthe εὐσέβειαν,well-reverencing, 7 ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe εὐσεβείᾳwell-reverencing τὴνthe φιλαδελφίαν,brotherly affection, ἐνin δὲbut τῇthe φιλαδελφίᾳbrotherly affection τὴνthe ἀγάπην·love; 8 ταῦταthese (things) γὰρfor ὑμῖνto you ὑπάρχονταexisting καὶand πλεονάζονταbecoming more οὐκnot ἀργοὺςineffective οὐδὲnor ἀκάρπουςunfruitful καθίστησινit is putting down εἰςinto τὴνthe τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us Ἰησοῦof Jesus ΧριστοῦChrist ἐπίγνωσιν·accurate knowledge;

9 ᾧto whom γὰρfor μὴnot πάρεστινis being beside ταῦτα,these (things), τυφλόςblind ἐστινhe is μυωπάζων,partly closing the eyes, λήθηνforgetfulness λαβὼνhaving received τοῦof the καθαρισμοῦcleansing τῶνof the πάλαιof old αὐτοῦof him ἁμαρτιῶν.of sins. 10 διὸTherefore μᾶλλον,even more, ἀδελφοί,brothers, σπουδάσατεbe diligent βεβαίανstable, firm ὑμῶνof you τὴνthe κλῆσινcalling καὶand ἐκλογὴνchoosing ποιεῖσθαι·to be making; ταῦταthese (things) γὰρfor ποιοῦντεςdoing οὐnot μὴnot πταίσητέyou might stumble ποτε·ever; 11 οὕτωςthus γὰρfor πλουσίωςrichly ἐπιχορηγηθήσεταιwill be supplied upon ὑμῖνto you ἡthe εἴσοδοςentrance εἰςinto τὴνthe αἰώνιονeverlasting βασιλείανkingdom τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us καὶand σωτῆροςof Savior ἸησοῦJesus Χριστοῦ.Christ.

12 ΔιὸThrough which μελλήσωI shall be disposed ἀεὶever ὑμᾶςyou ὑπομιμνήσκεινto be reminding περὶabout τούτων,these (things), καίπερand-even εἰδότας(ones) having known καὶand ἐστηριγμένουςhaving been firmly fixed ἐνin τῇthe παρούσῃbeing beside ἀληθείᾳ.truth. 13 δίκαιονRighteous δὲbut ἡγοῦμαι,I am considering, ἐφ’upon ὅσονhow much [time] εἰμὶI am ἐνin τούτῳthis τῷthe σκηνώματι,tabernacle, διεγείρεινto be thoroughly raising up ὑμᾶςyou ἐνin ὑπομνήσει,reminding, 14 εἰδὼςhaving known ὅτιthat ταχινήswift ἐστινis ἡthe ἀπόθεσιςputting off τοῦof the σκηνώματόςtabernacle μου,of me, καθὼςaccording as καὶalso ὁthe κύριοςLord ἡμῶνof us ἸησοῦςJesus ΧριστὸςChrist ἐδήλωσένmade evident μοι·to me; 15 σπουδάσωI shall speed up δὲbut καὶalso ἑκάστοτεeach time ἔχεινto be having ὑμᾶςyou μετὰafter τὴνthe ἐμὴνmy ἔξοδονexodus τὴνthe τούτωνof these (things) μνήμηνmention ποιεῖσθαι.to be making.

16 οὐNot γὰρfor σεσοφισμένοιςto (ones) having been wisely made μύθοιςto myths ἐξακολουθήσαντεςhaving followed out ἐγνωρίσαμενwe made known ὑμῖνto you τὴνthe τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us Ἰησοῦof Jesus ΧριστοῦChrist δύναμινpower καὶand παρουσίαν,presence, ἀλλ’but ἐπόπταιonlookers γενηθέντεςhaving become τῆςof the ἐκείνουof that (one) μεγαλειότητος.of magnificence. 17 λαβὼν[He] having received γὰρfor παρὰbeside θεοῦof God πατρὸςFather τιμὴνhonor καὶand δόξανglory φωνῆςof voice ἐνεχθείσηςhaving been borne αὐτῷto him τοιᾶσδεof such [voice] ὑπὸby τῆςthe μεγαλοπρεποῦςfittingly great δόξηςglory ὉThe υἱόςSon μουof me ὁthe ἀγαπητόςloved μουof me οὗτόςthis ἐστιν,is, εἰςinto ὃνwhom ἐγὼI εὐδόκησα,—thought well,— 18 καὶand ταύτηνthis τὴνthe φωνὴνvoice ἡμεῖςwe ἠκούσαμενheard ἐξout of οὐρανοῦheaven ἐνεχθεῖσανhaving been borne σὺνtogether with αὐτῷhim ὄντες[we] being ἐνin τῷthe ἁγίῳholy ὄρει.mountain.

19 καὶAnd ἔχομενwe are having βεβαιότερονmore stable τὸνthe προφητικὸνprophetic λόγον,word, ᾧto which καλῶςfinely ποιεῖτεyou are doing προσέχοντεςhaving [mind] toward ὡςas λύχνῳto lamp φαίνοντιshining ἐνin αὐχμηρῷparched τόπῳ,place, ἕωςuntil οὗwhich [time] ἡμέραday διαυγάσῃmight beam through καὶand φωσφόροςlight bearer ἀνατείλῃmight rise up ἐνin ταῖςthe καρδίαιςhearts ὑμῶν·of you; 20 τοῦτοthis (thing) πρῶτονfirst γινώσκοντες(ones) knowing ὅτιthat πᾶσαevery προφητείαprophecy γραφῆςof Scripture ἰδίαςof own ἐπιλύσεωςloosing upon οὐnot γίνεται,is becoming, 21 οὐnot γὰρfor θελήματιto will ἀνθρώπουof man ἠνέχθηwas borne προφητείαprophecy ποτέ,at any time, ἀλλὰbut ὑπὸby πνεύματοςspirit ἁγίουholy φερόμενοιbeing borne ἐλάλησανthey spoke ἀπὸfrom θεοῦGod ἄνθρωποι.men.

CHAPTER 2♠

1 ᾿ΕγένοντοThere occurred δὲbut καὶalso ψευδοπροφῆταιfalse prophets ἐνin τῷthe λαῷ,people, ὡςas καὶalso ἐνin ὑμῖνyou ἔσονταιwill be ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι,false teachers, οἵτινεςwho παρεισάξουσινwill lead into beside αἱρέσειςsects ἀπωλείας,of destruction, καὶand τὸνthe ἀγοράσανταhaving bought αὐτοὺςthem δεσπότηνmaster ἀρνούμενοι,denying, ἐπάγοντεςleading upon ἑαυτοῖςto themselves ταχινὴνswift ἀπώλειαν·destruction; 2 καὶand πολλοὶmany ἐξακολουθήσουσινwill follow out αὐτῶνof them ταῖςto the ἀσελγείαις,acts of loose conduct, δι’through οὓςwhom ἡthe ὁδὸςway τῆςof the ἀληθείαςtruth βλασφημηθήσεται·will be blasphemed; 3 καὶand ἐνin πλεονεξίᾳcovetousness πλαστοῖςto molded λόγοιςwords ὑμᾶςyou ἐμπορεύσονται·they will make their way in; οἷςto whom τὸthe κρίμαjudgment ἔκπαλαιout of old οὐκnot ἀργεῖ,is being ineffective, καὶand ἡthe ἀπώλειαdestruction αὐτῶνof them οὐnot νυστάζει.is nodding.

4 εἰIf γὰρfor ὁthe θεὸςGod ἀγγέλωνof angels ἁμαρτησάντωνhaving sinned οὐκnot ἐφείσατο,he spared, ἀλλὰbut σειροῖςto pits ζόφουof gloom ταρταρώσαςhaving cast into Tartarus παρέδωκενhe gave beside εἰςinto κρίσινjudgment τηρουμένους,(ones) being kept, 5 καὶand ἀρχαίουof archaic κόσμουworld οὐκnot ἐφείσατο,he spared, ἀλλὰbut ὄγδοονeighth (one) ΝῶεNoah δικαιοσύνηςof righteousness κήρυκαpreacher ἐφύλαξεν,he guarded, κατακλυσμὸνcataclysm κόσμῳto world ἀσεβῶνof irreverential (ones) ἐπάξας,having led upon, 6 καὶand πόλειςcities Σοδόμωνof Sodom καὶand Γομόρραςof Gomorrah τεφρώσαςhaving reduced to ashes κατέκρινεν,he condemned, ὑπόδειγμαexample μελλόντωνof (things) being about (to come) ἀσεβέσινto irreverential (ones) τεθεικώς,[he] having put, 7 καὶand δίκαιονrighteous ΛὼτLot καταπονούμενονbeing afflicted down ὑπὸby τῆςthe τῶνof the ἀθέσμωνillegal (ones) ἐνin ἀσελγείᾳlewdness ἀναστροφῆςof conduct ἐρύσατο,—he drew for self,— 8 βλέμματιto looking at γὰρfor καὶand ἀκοῇto hearing δίκαιοςrighteous ἐνκατοικῶνdwelling within ἐνin αὐτοῖςthem ἡμέρανday ἐξout of ἡμέραςday ψυχὴνsoul δικαίανrighteous ἀνόμοιςto lawless ἔργοιςworks ἐβασάνιζεν,—he was tormenting— 9 οἶδενhas known ΚύριοςLord εὐσεβεῖςwell-reverential (ones) ἐκout of πειρασμοῦtrial ῥύεσθαι,to be drawing for self, ἀδίκουςunrighteous (ones) δὲbut εἰςinto ἡμέρανday κρίσεωςof judgment κολαζομένους(ones) being lopped off τηρεῖν,to be keeping, 10 μάλισταmostly δὲbut τοὺςthe (ones) ὀπίσωbehind σαρκὸςflesh ἐνin ἐπιθυμίᾳdesire μιασμοῦof defilement πορευομένουςgoing their way καὶand κυριότητοςof lordship καταφρονοῦντας.minding down.

τολμηταί,Daring, αὐθάδεις,self-pleasing, δόξαςglories οὐnot τρέμουσιν,they are trembling at, βλασφημοῦντες,blaspheming, 11 ὅπουwhere ἄγγελοιangels ἰσχύϊto strength καὶand δυνάμειto power μείζονεςgreater ὄντεςbeing οὐnot φέρουσινthey are bearing κατ’down on αὐτῶνthem παρὰbeside ΚυρίῳLord βλάσφημονblasphemous κρίσιν.judgment. 12 οὗτοιThese (ones) δέ,but, ὡςas ἄλογαunreasoning ζῷαliving things γεγεννημέναhaving been born φυσικὰnatural εἰςinto ἅλωσινcapture καὶand φθοράν,corruption, ἐνin οἷςwhich (things) ἀγνοοῦσινthey are not knowing βλασφημοῦντες,blaspheming, ἐνin τῇthe φθορᾷcorruption αὐτῶνof them καὶalso φθαρήσονται,they will be corrupted, 13 ἀδικούμενοιtreating themselves unrighteously μισθὸνwage ἀδικίας·of unrighteousness;

ἡδονὴνPleasure ἡγούμενοιconsidering τὴνthe ἐνin ἡμέρᾳday τρυφήν,luxury, σπίλοιspots καὶand μῶμοιblemishes ἐντρυφῶντεςliving in luxury ἐνin ταῖςthe ἀπάταιςseductions αὐτῶνof them συνευωχούμενοιfeeding selves well together ὑμῖν,to you, 14 ὀφθαλμοὺςeyes ἔχοντες[they] having μεστοὺςfull μοιχαλίδοςof adulteress καὶand ἀκαταπαύστουςunceasing down ἁμαρτίας,of sin, δελεάζοντεςbaiting on ψυχὰςsouls ἀστηρίκτους,not firmly fixed, καρδίανheart γεγυμνασμένηνhaving been trained (like gymnast) πλεονεξίαςof covetousness ἔχοντες,[they] having, κατάραςof curse τέκνα,children, 15 καταλείποντεςleaving down εὐθεῖανstraight ὁδὸνway ἐπλανήθησαν,they were made to err, ἐξακολουθήσαντεςhaving followed out τῇto the ὁδῷway τοῦof the ΒαλαὰμBalaam τοῦof the ΒεὼρBeor ὃςwho μισθὸνreward ἀδικίαςof unrighteousness ἠγάπησενloved 16 ἔλεγξινreproof δὲbut ἔσχενhe had ἰδίαςof own παρανομίας·exceeding of law; ὑποζύγιονbeast under yoke ἄφωνονvoiceless ἐνin ἀνθρώπουof man φωνῇvoice φθεγξάμενονhaving uttered sound ἐκώλυσενit hindered τὴνthe τοῦof the προφήτουprophet παραφρονίαν.beside-mindedness.

17 οὗτοίThese (ones) εἰσινare πηγαὶfountains ἄνυδροιwaterless καὶand ὁμίχλαιmists ὑπὸby λαίλαποςviolent windstorm ἐλαυνόμεναι,being driven, οἷςto whom ὁthe ζόφοςgloom τοῦof the σκότουςdarkness τετήρηται.has been kept. 18 ὑπέρογκαOver-swelling (things) γὰρfor ματαιότητοςof vanity φθεγγόμενοιuttering sound of δελεάζουσινthey are baiting on ἐνin ἐπιθυμίαιςdesires σαρκὸςof flesh ἀσελγείαιςto loose habits τοὺςthe (ones) ὀλίγωςby little ἀποφεύγονταςfleeing from τοὺςthe (ones) ἐνin πλάνῃerror ἀναστρεφομένους,being turned up, 19 ἐλευθερίανfreedom αὐτοῖςto them ἐπαγγελλόμενοι,[they] promising, αὐτοὶvery (ones) δοῦλοιslaves ὑπάρχοντεςexisting τῆςof the φθορᾶς·corruption; ᾧto whom γάρfor τιςanyone ἥττηται,has been made less, τούτῳto this (one) δεδούλωται.he has been enslaved. 20 εἰIf γὰρfor ἀποφυγόντεςhaving fled from τὰthe μιάσματαdefilements τοῦof the κόσμουworld ἐνin ἐπιγνώσειaccurate knowledge τοῦof the κυρίουLord καὶand σωτῆροςSavior Ἰησοῦof Jesus ΧριστοῦChrist τούτοιςto these (things) δὲbut πάλινagain ἐμπλακέντεςhaving been inwoven ἡττῶνται,they are being made less, γέγονενit has become αὐτοῖςto them τὰthe ἔσχαταlast (things) χείροναworse τῶνof theπρώτων.first (things). 21 κρεῖττονBetter γὰρfor ἦνit was αὐτοῖςto them μὴnot ἐπεγνωκέναιto have accurately known τὴνthe ὁδὸνway τῆςof the δικαιοσύνηςrighteousness ἢthan ἐπιγνοῦσινto (ones) having accurately known ὑποστρέψαιto turn under ἐκout of τῆςthe παραδοθείσηςhaving been given beside αὐτοῖςto them ἁγίαςof holy ἐντολῆς·commandment; 22 συμβέβηκενhas stepped together αὐτοῖςto them τὸthe (thing) τῆςof the ἀληθοῦςtrue παροιμίαςproverb ΚύωνDog ἐπιστρέψαςhaving turned upon ἐπὶupon τὸthe ἴδιονown ἐξέραμα,vomit, καίand ῟ΥςSow λουσαμένηhaving been bathed εἰςinto κυλισμὸνrolling βορβόρου.of mire.

CHAPTER 3♠

1 ΤαύτηνThis ἤδη,already, ἀγαπητοί,loved (ones), δευτέρανsecond ὑμῖνto you γράφωI am writing ἐπιστολήν,letter, ἐνin αἷςwhich [letters] διεγείρωI am thoroughly raising up ὑμῶνof you ἐνin ὑπομνήσειreminding τὴνthe εἰλικρινῆsincere διάνοιαν,mental perception, 2 μνησθῆναιto remember τῶνof theπροειρημένωνhaving been previously spoken ῥημάτωνsayings ὑπὸby τῶνthe ἁγίωνholy προφητῶνprophets καὶand τῆςof the τῶνof the ἀποστόλωνapostles ὑμῶνof you ἐντολῆςcommandment τοῦof the κυρίουLord καὶand σωτῆρος,Savior, 3 τοῦτοthis πρῶτονfirst γινώσκοντες[you] knowing ὅτιthat ἐλεύσονταιwill come ἐπ’upon ἐσχάτωνlast (ones) τῶνof the ἡμερῶνdays ἐνin ἐμπαιγμονῇplaying in sport ἐμπαῖκταιplayers in sport κατὰaccording to τὰςthe ἰδίαςown ἐπιθυμίαςdesires αὐτῶνof them πορευόμενοιgoing their way 4 καὶand λέγοντεςsaying ΠοῦWhere ἐστὶνis ἡthe ἐπαγγελίαpromise τῆςof the παρουσίαςpresence αὐτοῦ;of him? ἀφ’from ἧςwhich [day] γὰρfor οἱthe πατέρεςfathers ἐκοιμήθησαν,fell asleep, πάνταall (things) οὕτωςthus διαμένειis remaining through ἀπ’from ἀρχῆςbeginning κτίσεως.of creation.

5 λανθάνειIs lying hidden to γὰρfor αὐτοὺςthem τοῦτοthis θέλοντας(them) being willing ὅτιthat οὐρανοὶheavens ἦσανwere ἔκπαλαιout of old καὶand γῆearth ἐξout of ὕδατοςwater καὶand δι’through ὕδατοςwater συνεστῶσαhaving stood together τῷto the τοῦof the θεοῦGod λόγῳ,to word, 6 δι’through ὧνwhich (things) ὁthe τότεthen κόσμοςworld ὕδατιto water κατακλυσθεὶςhaving been deluged ἀπώλετο·was destroyed; 7 οἱthe δὲbut νῦνnow οὐρανοὶheavens καὶandἡthe γῆearth τῷto the αὐτῷvery λόγῳword τεθησαυρισμένοιhave been treasured up εἰσὶνthey are πυρὶto fire τηρούμενοιbeing kept εἰςinto ἡμέρανday κρίσεωςof judgment καὶand ἀπωλείαςof destruction τῶνof the ἀσεβῶνirreverential ἀνθρώπων.men.

8 ἛνOne δὲbut τοῦτοthis (thing) μὴnot λανθανέτωlet it be lying hidden to ὑμᾶς,you, ἀγαπητοί,loved (ones), ὅτιthat μίαone ἡμέραday παρὰbeside ΚυρίῳLord ὡςas χίλιαthousand ἔτηyears καὶand χίλιαthousand ἔτηyears ὡςas ἡμέραday μία.one. 9 οὐNot βραδύνειis being slow ΚύριοςLord τῆςof the ἐπαγγελίας,promise, ὡςas τινεςsome (ones) βραδυτῆταslowness ἡγοῦνται,they are considering, ἀλλὰbut μακροθυμεῖis being long in spirit εἰςinto ὑμᾶς,you, μὴnot βουλόμενόςwishing τιναςany (ones) ἀπολέσθαιto be destroyed ἀλλὰbut πάνταςall (ones) εἰςinto μετάνοιανrepentance χωρῆσαι.to allow space for. 10 ἭξειWill come δὲbut ἡμέραday Κυρίουof Lord ὡςas κλέπτης,thief, ἐνin ᾗwhich οἱthe οὐρανοὶheavens ῥοιζηδὸνwith rushing noise παρελεύσονται,will go beside, στοιχεῖαelements δὲbut καυσούμεναbeing burned up λυθήσεται,will be loosed, καὶand γῆearth καὶand τὰthe ἐνin αὐτῇit ἔργαworks εὑρεθήσεται.♣will be found.

11 ΤούτωνOf these (things) οὕτωςthus πάντωνof all λυομένωνbeing loosed ποταποὺςwhat sort of [men] δεῖit is binding ὑπάρχεινto be existing ὑμᾶςyou ἐνin ἁγίαιςholy ἀναστροφαῖς(acts of) conduct καὶand εὐσεβείαις,well-reverential (deeds), 12 προσδοκῶνταςawaiting καὶand σπεύδονταςspeeding up τὴνthe παρουσίανpresence τῆςof the τοῦof the θεοῦGod ἡμέρας,day, δι’through ἣνwhich οὐρανοὶheavens πυρούμενοιbeing on fire λυθήσονταιwill be loosed καὶand στοιχεῖαelements καυσούμεναbeing intensely hot τήκεται·is being melted;
13 καινοὺςnew δὲbut οὐρανοὺςheavens καὶand γῆνearth καινὴνnew κατὰaccording toτὸthe ἐπάγγελμαpromise αὐτοῦof him προσδοκῶμεν,we are awaiting, ἐνin οἷςwhich (ones) δικαιοσύνηrighteousness κατοικεῖ.is dwelling.

14 Διό,Through which, ἀγαπητοί,loved (ones), ταῦταthese (things) προσδοκῶντεςawaiting σπουδάσατεspeed you up ἄσπιλοιspotless (ones) καὶand ἀμώμητοιunblemished (ones) αὐτῷto him εὑρεθῆναιto be found ἐνin εἰρήνῃ,peace, 15 καὶand τὴνthe τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us μακροθυμίανlongness of spirit σωτηρίανsalvation ἡγεῖσθε,be you considering, καθὼςaccording as καὶalso ὁthe ἀγαπητὸςloved ἡμῶνof us ἀδελφὸςbrother ΠαῦλοςPaul κατὰaccording to τὴνthe δοθεῖσανhaving been given αὐτῷto him σοφίανwisdom ἔγραψενhe wrote ὑμῖν,to you, 16 ὡςas καὶalso ἐνin πάσαιςall ἐπιστολαῖςletters λαλῶν[he] speaking ἐνin αὐταῖςthem περὶabout τούτων,these (things), ἐνin αἷςwhich [letters] ἐστὶνis δυσνόητάhard for mind τινα,some (things), ἃwhich οἱthe ἀμαθεῖςnon-learners καὶand ἀστήρικτοιunsteady στρεβλοῦσινare distorting ὡςas καὶalso τὰςthe λοιπὰςleftover (ones) γραφὰςScriptures πρὸςtoward τὴνthe ἰδίανown αὐτῶνof them ἀπώλειαν.destruction.

17 Ὑμεῖςyou οὖν,therefore, ἀγαπητοί,loved (ones), προγινώσκοντεςknowing before φυλάσσεσθεbe guarding yourselves ἵναin order that μὴnot τῇto the τῶνof the ἀθέσμωνillegal (ones) πλάνῃerror συναπαχθέντεςhaving been led off together ἐκπέσητεyou might fall out τοῦof the ἰδίουown στηριγμοῦ,firm fixedness, 18 αὐξάνετεbe you growing δὲbut ἐνin χάριτιgrace καὶand γνώσειknowledge τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us καὶand σωτῆροςof Savior ἸησοῦJesus Χριστοῦ.Christ. αὐτῷTo him ἡthe δόξαglory καὶand νῦνnow καὶand εἰςinto ἡμέρανday αἰῶνος.
